Corbett resident Louis Chartrand passed away March 27, 2025. He was 79. Louis had been living with Parkinson's Disease for several years. He passed peacefully with his family at his side.
Louis was born in Anchorage, AK, to Merle and Beryl Chartrand. His father was an electrician and local hunting guide, and his mother was a teacher. After his father's untimely death in 1955, his mother relocated the family to Zillah, WA, where she married a local farmer, Grover Davis. Louis graduated from Zillah High School in 1964.
After graduating high school, he moved to Portland for work. He worked for several local companies as a young man, including Gresham Sand & Gravel, Dick Kunkel Construction, and Amwest Construction. From 1966 to 1973 he was a tool & die maker for Dimeco, Inc, where he learned to weld and run a variety of heavy machinery. From 1973 on, he was the owner of Chartrand Construction, working throughout the community and training many young men who followed in his footsteps.
Louis moved his family to Corbett in 1978, where he continued to live until shortly before his death. He was a skilled mechanic, welder, builder, and all around handyman. He loved the outdoors, and enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and being with friends. He enjoyed animals, especially his dogs Levi and Heidi. His humor and wit will be remembered by many.
Louis is survived by his four children, William Chartrand (Central Oregon), Norah Cartier (Portland), Sara Mickelsen (Corbett) and Dixie Houck (Corbett). He was the proud grandpa to Nick Cartier, James Houck, and Dylan Houck. He is also survived by his longtime partner, Susan Richard (Corbett) and his sister, Linda Pollock (Zillah, WA). He was preceded in death by his older brother, David Chartrand in 2020.
