

Marilyn Potter Czel passed away on January 20th, 2017, in Portland, Oregon. She was born on May 16th, 1931, in Aimes, Iowa, to her parents: Merle Arnold and Velda Naomi (Randau) Potter. She attended Los Angeles High School, from which she graduated in 1949.
Following graduation, Marilyn enrolled at Occidental College, from which she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Spanish and Latin American History. She had the opportunity to study abroad, and she did so at the Academia Internacional de Espanol in Mexico. After returning to the United States, she received her teaching certificate from Occidental College, and ultimately, her Master’s Degree in Spanish from West Chester State College.
Over the course of her career, Marilyn taught Spanish at numerous High Schools and Colleges in California, Florida, Delaware, and Colorado. She taught Spanish at Pueblo County High School from 1976 until her retirement in 1991. She was also passionate about being involved in her community, and she was a member of many organizations. While living in Florida, she was on the Council of 101 at the Loch Haven Art Center, and she was a Board Member of the Art Festival Committee. She was involved with P.T.A for six years, and a Roommother for 3 years. During her time in Delaware, she was a member of the Delaware Museum of Art, and a participant in cultural exchange and social service programs for Spanish-speaking. And finally, while living in California, she was an active member of GLAZA.
In addition to being involved in her community, Marilyn was interested in Archeology and the preservation of endangered species. She also enjoyed playing tennis and traveling. She enjoyed experiencing the culture of the countries she visited, and during her life, she lived in Mexico, Spain, and Tunisia. She loved animals, especially cats and dogs.
Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents. She is survived by her son, Michael Edward Czel; and her grandchildren, Brandon Alexander Czel and Julianna Alexandra Czel.
A Funeral Service will be held on Saturday, January 28th, 2017, at 1:00 pm at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham, with viewing starting at noon. Marilyn will be laid to rest at Zion Cemetery in Estacada.
She was loved, and will be missed.
