Funeral services will begin at 10am on Friday, January 4, 2019 at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, which is located at 520 W. Powell Blvd, Gresham. The committal to Willamette National Cemetery with Military Honors will commence afterwards at 1pm and is located at 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd. At the age of 80, Monte passed away on December 25, 2018 surrounded by his loving and caring family.
On October 1, 1938, in Silverton, Oregon, Monte became the firstborn of four children to Antone Peter Schlechter and Evelyn Lucille (Coomler) Schlechter. A few years later the family moved towards the Oregon coast and resided in Hebo. A few months after graduating Netstucca High in 1957, Monte proudly enlisted in the United States Navy and served for four years before being Honorable Discharged and reaching the rank of Machinest Repairman Second Class. While serving in the Navy, Monte was married for 10 years which resulted in two children; Monte Jr and Cynthia. After the Navy, Monte then met and married the love of his life Mona E Reeder on June 20, 1970 in Portland, Oregon. Mona brought two beautiful children into the marriage, Robert and Candy. They established their forever home in East County where they would begin to create everlasting memories of their adventures of fishing, hunting, camping, traveling and the casinos. Monte worked for Boeing and Reynolds Aluminum (Alcoa) where he retired in 2001.
Monte was a very social person and was involved in multiple organizations. Monte was a lifetime member (+48 years) of the Gateway Elks Lodge #2411 and Gresham Eagles Lodge # 2151. He was also a member (+27 years) of the American Legion Post 1 and a member of the East Portland Moose Lodge #1891 since 1999.
Monte is survived by his wife Mona of 48 years; children: Cynthia Roles and Robert Reeder; 10 Grandchildren and 3 Great Grandchildren, siblings; Larry Schlechter and Linda Kirschner. He is preceded in death by his parents, Antone and Evelyn, his brother, Joe, children; Monte Jr and Candy Dey and grandchildren Matthew Ryan and Jessica Dey.
