Roger Weitzel was born and raised in NE Portland to parents Raymond and Lydia Weitzel (Klaus) along with his sister, Kathryn Weitzel.
He attended Sabin Elementary and Benson Polytechnic High School. During his school years Roger excelled at basketball and football, however his athletic pursuits took a backseat to his future wife, Vicki Patricia Stickel. Vicki and Roger married November 30,1957, and were married for 65 years.
Roger started his work career with his father running the Raymond Weitzel Garbage Service. Soon his son, Jim was born in September of 1958, then his daughter, Julie arrived in January of 1961. During his early working years, he met Ken Owens, who introduced him to the opportunities the Portland Fire Bureau could offer. He took the Fire entrance exam and was hired August 1966. He served a 30-year career as a Fire Fighter, Company Officer, Training Officer, Shift Commander Squad 1, and Training Academy, retiring with pride of service in June 1996.
When Roger wasn’t at the Fire Department you could find him fishing. His fishing knowledge passed on by his father garnered him a high level of success and anyone lucky enough to fish with Roger knew their chances of catching fish were high. His beloved fishing partners were his wife and children. Vicki being the luckiest at fishing. Julie would go along when she was younger, but only if
Jim was staying home.
Post retirement Roger and Vicki moved to Summer Place Adult Community living in 1998. Roger quickly became involved in volunteer events; perhaps this was the first time in his life that he felt he didn’t need to be in charge and he just enjoyed his friends and the times they spent together.
Roger struggled with health issues in the last year of his life, passing quietly and peacefully in his sleep. He is survived by his wife, Vicki, sister, Kathe, son, Jim and
daughter, Julie. He was deeply loved and will be greatly missed.
