Rebecca L. Berggren, age 67, of Portland, Oregon passed away on September 19, 2023 in Gresham, Oregon due to stroke-related complications. She was born November 8, 1955 in New Westminster, B.C., Canada to Clifford and Dorothy Berggren.
Becca attended Evergreen High School and Clark College in Vancouver, Washington, receiving an Associates Degree from Clark College. She worked in various technical and quality assurance positions in Oregon’s tech industry, most recently at Plexus where her skills, work ethic, and cheerful personality were much appreciated.
Becca was also a proud veteran of the 142nd Fighter Wing, Oregon Air National Guard, retiring with rank of Master Sergeant after serving a 23-year career in radio relay maintenance and aircraft maintenance. She earned several commendations and made many life-long friends there.
Becca was a bookworm and liked poetry, even writing her own. She found joy in crystals and geodes, unique seashells and sea glass, and odd pieces of driftwood. She was always up for a challenge and adventure, from building jigsaw puzzles to learning to scuba dive, and she even gave skydiving a try once. She relished the opportunities for travel, including visiting friends in New Zealand and her military deployments to Iceland (where she fell in love with the culture and the scenery), Turkey (where she rode a camel), Panama, and around the United States. She loved nature – listening to a good rainstorm was one of her favorite things, and she was always happy on the Oregon coast. No matter what she did, she always chose the road less traveled.
Becca was the living definition of a free spirit. She loved all things and people that are quirky and imperfect, and she delighted in spontaneity. She enjoyed watching flash mob dance or musical performances online and always hoped to see one in person. She lit up at any opportunity to provide kindnesses to others, particularly those of the random and unexpected variety. Becca was a huge supporter of the creativity of local artisans, farmers, and small businesses and cheered for their success. One of her most defining qualities was her intentional focus on positivity. She never talked about her setbacks in life, preferring instead to highlight the good in everything. All this earned Becca a fiercely loyal group of friends and extended family who will miss her dearly.
Becca is survived by her younger siblings Lisa (Mike) Joner of Spanish Fork, Utah and Eric Berggren (Barbara Dubbert) of Gresham, Oregon. She is also survived by her nephew Michael (Rebekah) Joner of Loveland, Ohio and her nieces Megan (Micah) Nomiyama of Bellevue, Nebraska and Michelle Joner of Mapleton, Utah, along with seven “grand”-nephews and three “grand”-nieces.
Becca’s family is grateful for the kind and professional care provided by the staff of Fairlawn Health and Rehabilitation nursing facility in Gresham and for all the support of Becca’s circle of friends and supporters.
Interment will take place at 11:15am on Friday, October 6, 2023 at Willamette National Cemetery, 11800 SE Mt. Scott Blvd., Portland, OR 97086. An informal memorial gathering will follow at 12:30pm at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home, Timberline Room, 520 W. Powell Blvd., Gresham, OR 97030, and a celebration of life will be held at 3:30pm at Bridge City Taproom, 620 SE 122nd Ave. (just south of Stark Street), Portland, OR 97233.
