

Sam was born August 8, 1946 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. He graduated from David Douglas High School in 1964. Sam was a two sport athlete and earned varsity letters in both football and wrestling.
After high school graduation, Sam earned an Associate Arts degree from Portland Community College. In 1966 he enlisted in the Army and was stationed at Fort Sill, Oklahoma. After his discharge from military service, Sam completed his Bachelor of Science degree in Sociology at Portland State. He worked for the State of Oregon and Multnomah County for 28 years as a case worker in the Department of Adult and Family Services.
In 2002 Sam retired and spent the majority of his time doing what he enjoyed most. He was an avid reader and sports memorabilia collector, loved his pet cats and especially enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Sam was a humble generous person. He contributed to a wide variety of worthwhile causes and was always willing to help others. He was a member of Gethsemane Lutheran Church for over 52 years as well as being a member of The American Legion, Post Number 0150 for 33 years.
Sam is survived by his brother George Shoemaker, sister-in-law Jill and niece Heather. At Sam’s request no services will be held. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery. Donations may be given in his name to Gethsemane Lutheran Church, 11560 S.E. Market St., Portland, OR. 97216 or Dove Lewis Emergency Animal Hospital, 1945 N.W. Pettygrove, Portland, OR. 97209. .
