"She was so sweet," a sentiment echoed by many. A beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, Shirley Myra Hill passed away at the age of 89 in Portland. She was born in Portland, the daughter of Harry E. and Dorothy Pratt. She graduated from Gresham High School in 1942, and then worked as a draftsman for the war effort after graduation. She also worked for Tommy Luke Flowers until she met and fell in love with her future husband, Spencer Hill. They married in 1945 and enjoyed 52 years of marriage until he passed away in 1997.
A lifelong resident of the Portland area, Shirley was a caregiver to many, starting with her three younger brothers while still a child herself, and on to caring for her husband, parents, in-laws and various aunts and uncles through their illnesses and advanced ages. She enjoyed flowers and gardening, boating and spending time with her family. She was an active and longtime member of Covenant Presbyterian Church in Gresham.
Shirley was preceded in death by her husband; a twin sister, Phyllis; and two brothers, Loren Pratt and Allen Pratt. She is survived by a brother, Dustinn Pratt; five children, Marilyn Hill (Dennis Allison), Julie Hankins (Steve), Alison Harmon, Scott Hill (Sandy), and Thomas Hill (Melissa Brown); seven grandchildren, Leslie, Amy, Kara, Brent, Andrew, Spencer, and Jaclyn; and six great-grandchildren, Zachary, Jordan, Samantha, Sydney, Baxter, and Henry.
Her family would like to thank the staff at Russellville Park Assisted Living and Memory Care and Karen Bennett for providing wonderful care to her in the final years of her life.
A Celebration of Life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Bateman Carroll Funeral Home in Gresham. In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made to SnowCap Community Charities, 17805 S.E. Stark St., Portland, OR 97233.
