

Velma Hughes Bruhn passed away on August 23, 2011 in Portland, Oregon at the age of 84 and was buried at Lincoln Memorial Park in Portland. She was born on December 8, 1926 in Pasco, Washington to Howard and Myrtle (Mooney) Pollock. Velma graduated from Cottage Grove High School in Cottage Grove, OR and San Jose Bible College in San Jose, CA.
Velma met her husband Billy J. Hughes while in college and they married in 1946. They spent most of their lives in the Portland/Gresham area and raised 3 children, Tim, Steve and Carol. Billy passed away in 1983. Later she married Robert Bruhn who also preceded her in death.
Velma was a long time Portland/Gresham area resident. She enjoyed traveling and first got involved with planning and leading senior tours while at the Gresham Senior Center. She later went on to start her own business developing, organizing and leading senior tours all over the world.
Velma was a long time member of Kern Park Christian Church in Portland. Flower gardening, painting, and sewing were life time enjoyments. She was active in her church and helped develop an endowment fund. She was a gifted artist over the years, and most recently enjoyed taking up water color painting. Velma cherished most the opportunities to help others, especially aging friends.
Velma is survived by her children and their families; Tim and Janice Hughes, Steve Hughes, and Carol and Robert King. She was blessed with four grandchildren (Melinda, Jason, Elissa and Nathan), and three great-grandchildren (Grace, Ford and Faith).
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Kern Park Endowment Fund, American Cancer Society or to Parkinson’s Research.
A Celebration of Velma’s life will be on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at 11:00 a.m. at Kern Park Christian Church, located at 6828 SE Holgate Blvd. in Portland, Oregon.
