Bill Brown and his 2nd night eyes! 10-79.....

I worked with Bill at the old East Precinct many years ago.  He was a good cop.  He was fair, decisive and dependable.  I will miss him.

I am so saddened to hear about Bill.  I worked with him for many years and we enjoyed great conversations about cooking, especially barbecue.  My prayers are with you.

My Mom (Ethel) & Dad (Hutch) met Bill when he use to come in to their Tavern (The Hutch).  He was young guy trying to find his way in the world when My Dad encouraged him to go into the Police Force (Hutch was a retired Portland Police Detective). I know it always pleased my Dad that he had. I remember Bill always had a smile for everyone.

I met Bill at the police academy when we were both just young rookies.  It was an honor to have shared our time at the police bureau.  Just to darn soon.....

I am deeply saddened to learn of Bill’s passing. Bill and I were “best buddies” during our high school years, shared our interest in ham radio together and had many adventures and misadventures together. I am the “friend” mentioned in the note from his cousin who was party to the infamous night when she got a free ride in the PPB paddy wagon for curfew violation as we did what many of us did of that era, “drag Broadway”. Bill and I both joined the military about the same time, he to the Air Force and me to the Navy where I crossed paths with middle brother Steve who was also in the Navy and in Japan at the same time period. I have a long standing tradition that began after my return from the military to visit the Brown family on Christmas Eve at Mom and Dad’s – Kay and Denny.  That has endured since 1970 with only one or two years missed. Thankfully, this past Christmas eve was one that I did make affording me the opportunity to catch up on events of the past year. Future Christmas eves will not be the same. To Bill’s wife, parents Kay and Denny, brother Steve and wife Diane, and little brother Ron, thank you for allowing me to be part of your extended family and my sincerest thoughts and prayers are with you at this time.

I knew Bill from High School where we were good friends. Bill will be missed. My prayers are with you.

Bill was a loving "BIG" brother and uncle and will be deeply missed.

Geoff's and my condolences go out to Jo and her family and to my Aunt Kay and Uncle Denny and to my cousins Steve and Ron.  I am Bill's cousin and grew up in Pullman, Washington.  My mother and Aunt Kay were close as sisters and we would often visit them in Portland for summer vacations.  My brother Mike and I have many fond memories of the times we spent with Bill, Steve and Ron.  One memory that really stuck in my mind was a trip my family made to visit the Browns during the summer when I was 14 or 15 years old.  One evening Bill and a friend were going to the movies and invited me to go along.  After the movie, they decided to show me the sites of downtown Portland.  Unbeknownst to us, the city had decided to institute a curfew in downtown Portland for kids under 16 starting that evening.  Of course we were stopped.  I admitted I didn't have any ID and that I was under 16.  Bill and his friend were two years older than I and tried to tell the police that I was Bill's cousin visiting from out of town, but it didn't matter.  They put me in the pattywagon and hauled me off to jail.  When I got there they of course wanted my name and address.  I told them I was from out of town and visiting my aunt and uncle but I didn't know their address or their unlisted telephone number.  I'm sure the police wondered what they were going to do with me.  I wasn't too concerned, I knew Bill would rescue me.  He found a pay phone (no cell phones in those days)and called his mother.  By then it was pretty late but Kay came down and got me out.  My folks didn't find out until the next morning.  They were sound asleep when Bill called Kay and we all decided not to tell them that night.  My name even made the Portland paper.  I'm convinced that this early brush with the law influenced Bill's career decision.
