

Dr. Ahmad Azar, a pediatrician who served the eastside of Detroit for over 50 years, died on June 16, 2014 at St. John Hospital in Detroit. He was 80 years old. Throughout his distinguished career Dr. Azar focused on improving access to high quality medical care within the community and in 1974 he established the Eastside Pediatric Clinic at St. John Hospital. The clinic was started to treat the communities young patients after hours in an environment other than an Emergency Room, and was the first of its kind in Michigan. Dr. Azar also was responsible for the creation of a Pediatric Phone Line to help give parents advice about children's health issues. Dr. Azar served in a wide range of leadership roles within the hospital and local insurance companies. He was passionate about the health of children and was deeply committed to shaping the delivery of healthcare throughout southeastern Michigan. Dr. Azar made many contributions to St. John Health System but will be most remembered as a pioneer for Pediatric Urgent Care. Dr. Azar was born in Tabriz, Iran and graduated from the University of Tabriz School of Medicine as Valedictorian. He served in an internship at Mercy Hospital in Canton, Ohio and spent a year as a post-graduate at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine before coming to the Detroit area for his Pediatric Residency at Children's Hospital of Michigan. He joined Country Club Pediatrics in 1968 which eventually became St. John Pediatric Associates. Ahmad is survived by his wife of 51 years Jean, and was the loving father of Michael and his wife Susan and their children Nicholas, Madeleine, and Alexander; Ramin and his son Jonathan; and Hassan and his wife Karen and their children Maxwell and Amelia. He loved attending his grandchildrens' sporting and school events, traveling and his home in Florida. Visitation for Dr. Azar will be held from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday, June 20 and Saturday, June 21 at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. The funeral is private.
