JoAnn, I am so very devastated and speechless. I cannot convey how my heart aches for you and your children. I share with you something I read recently -- God doesn't give us what we can handle; God helps us handle what we are given.

JoAnn, I'm in shock and don't know what to say at all! Alan has always been so nice to me and I've enjoyed hanging out with him at Avalon events. I've appreciated his advice relating to Fishbones and other topics, though I didn't follow it. You, Brian, and Mary are definately in my thoughts. JoAnn, Brian, Mary and family, I find it hard to believe that Alan is no longer with us, and trust that God, family and friends will help us through this tragedy and loss. This is a legacy he leaves that does not diminish as we gather and celebrate the gift of his life.

My sincerest sympathy to the family and friends of Alan. When we lose someone like Alan whose spirit shined so brightly for everyone to see--our world can't help but feel darker. But, for all of us who will miss Alan--it is comforting to know that Alan's joyful and loving spirit will be with us forever!

To Alan Gerlach's family: I was so sorry to read of Alan's passing in the Free Press. I had not seen him for several years, but for several years before that, met with him regularly through his job in sales to BASF. He was one of the friendliest people I knew, always in great humor, even in a tough market, and always interested in his customers. I am so sorry for your untimely loss, and will keep your family in my thoughts and prayers.

JoAnn, Brian, and Mary, I was so shocked and saddened to hear of your loss. Please accept my deepest condolences. I don't know if you remember me, but I babysat for Brian and Mary years ago, and I am one of the Jamieson girls. When I am in Grosse Pointe, I would often see your family at mass at Star of the Sea. Of course JoAnn and Alan were always smiling and friendly and loved to talk about their two beautiful children and all their successes. Please know that my prayers are with you in this difficult time.

To the Gerlach Family, I am deeply sorry about the loss of your husband and father. Brian, I only wish I could be closer to you at a time when you need the people who love you the most. You are in my thoughts and prayers constantly.

I first came to know the Gerlach family as they patronized the Beaupre Mobil Gas Station located at the corner of Mack Avenue and Fisher Road, where I worked in the early 1970s. Later I took the opportunity to get to know Alan better as we both became members of the Saint Paul On The Lake Catholic Church Young Adults Club. Alan possessed admirable character traits which I saught to emulate. Alan was truly a fine human being. I am a better person having known him. I worked with Alan right when I graduated from college in 1991 for a few years. He was a great guy to know in those "green years", as he always made things fun. I am still in the technical sales field now and saw Alan this past February, for the first time in maybe 15 years. He had not changed one bit. He still was the same fun-loving, smiling, genuine guy. Please know that he will always be remembered for the help he gave me and the laughs we shared. To his family, I am so very sorry for your loss.

I'm sorry for your loss he will be greatly missed. I have personaly known Alan from his days with Dale Prentice and Hesco and in over 20 years he has always had a smile and always willing to share a laught. He took pride in his job and even more when talking about his family. My condolences to you and the family in your time of sorrow.

We were glad to have the chance to visit with Alan when we were in town a couple of weeks ago. He always took the time to see how we were doing (and how the Honda was running!). We will miss his friendly smile and positive energy. Our thoughts and prayers are with the entire Gerlach family during this most difficult time...
