MOORE, Alvin F. November 17, 2010 Age 85 Beloved husband of the late Irene. Dear father of Kathleen Olson (Terry) and Maureen Moore. Loving grandfather of Jacquelynn, MacKenzie and Kassidy. Brother of Jane Ann Whited. Funeral service Saturday 10 am at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods. Visitation Friday 2-9 pm. Entombment Resurrection Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Association. Mr. Moore was born in Cookeville, Tennessee. His parents were the late Willie and Sally Moore. Mr. Moore left school after the eighth grade and went into the US Army at age 15. While he was in the army he received Bronze Star Medal. After the war he worked for the Champion Spark Plug Company for over 30 years. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and attending his grandson's hockey games and playing golf. Below is the official text from the Bronze Star Medal awarded to Mr. Moore. Staff Sergeant ALVIN F. MOORE, Infantry, 11th Infantry Regiment, United States Army. For distinctive heroism in connection with military operations against the enemy on 11 and 12 September 1944 near ARNAVILLE, France. When his platoon was pinned down due to intense enemy automatic rifle, Sergeant MOORE, a squad leader, together with another enlisted man, went on a reconnaissance patrol to probe the enemy's strength and position forward of our lines. Perceiving an enemy patrol approaching Sergeant MOORE instructed his comrade to lead the patrol to cover while he, himself took shelter in an abandoned dwelling in order to observe the enemy's activities. Sergeant MOORE from his vantage point in the dwelling then personally engaged the enemy with his individual weapon and succeeded in killing four of the enemy before the arrival of our reinforcements and the withdrawal of the enemy patrol. His courage and utter disregard for personal safety reflect great credit on himself and our armed forces. Entered military service from Tennessee.
