

Alwood J. Cornelius, age 70, died at Fr. Murray Nursing Center in Center Line on Thursday, August 4. Alwood was born in Detroit on July 16, 1941, the son of Lloyd and Evelyn Cornelius. Alwood enlisted in the United States Army in 1963 and served his county for three years. He was a guard in Germany and a drill sergeant stateside. In 1968, he married Suzanne Chartier at Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Harper Woods. For many years, Mr. Cornelius was a store manager for A&P at Harper and Thirteen Mile in St. Clair Shores. After he left the grocery business he worked for Damman Hardware on Kercheval in Grosse Pointe, retiring in 1999. Al was a familyman who enjoyed fishing, woodworking and do-it-yourself projects. He was the neighborhood handyman and started their first block party. He also coached baseball for his son's teams and was involved in his children's activities when they were young. Visitation for Mr. Cornelius will be from 2:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Monday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. A scripture service will be held at 7 o'clock Monday evening. On Tuesday, his body will lie instate at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack at Overlake in St. Clair Shores from 9:30 a.m. until mass begins at 10:00 a.m. Msgr. G. Michael Bugarin will officiate. Army military honors will follow after the mass.
