NOWAK, ARLENE T. SEPTEMBER 7, 2016 Age 85 Beloved daughter of the late Edward and Evaline Nowak. Dear sister of the late Marvin Nowak, and Mary Ellen Moran. Survived by many nieces and nephews. Arlene Nowak, Ed.D (Doctor of Education) was educated at Catholic schools in Detroit, Arlene was the first college graduate in her extended family when she received her BA from the University of Detroit in 1953. That year, she began a teaching career at McGregor Elementary (DPS) that would eventually lead to being named Dean of the School of Education at the University of Detroit in 1972, a post she held until 1997 retirement. Teaching was her passion and career, but she kept close to family including her brother Marvin, her parents, and sister Mary Ellen and children to whom she generously devoted time and energy as "big sister" par excellence. Arlene made her home in Grosse Pointe Woods for 60 years, but she cherished Sleeping Bear Dunes where she and her brother maintained a cottage and spent countless happy hours. A devout Catholic, Arlene was a longtime parishioner at Our Lady Queen of Peace and later St. Clare of Montefalco Church. Arlene was gifted with an extraordinarily keen intellect, and she generously shared that gift as well as her caring and compassion with family, friends, and students.
