

Catherine Galia, age 90, died peacefully on March 2, 2014 at St. John Hospital and Medical Center in Detroit. She died two days shy of her 91st birthday. Catherine was born on March 4, 1923 in Detroit, the daughter of Giovan and Angelina Galia; one of five children. Catherine graduated from Detroit Eastern High School in 1941. She was employed by several companies during her administrative career, notably Bohn Aluminum, which became Gulf + Western and later Wickes. She retired in 1988. Her extended family was her life. Catherine was a generous benefactor of the Capuchin Soup Kitchen in Detroit. Catherine is survived by her sister-in-law, Viola Galia and brother-in-law, Frank Maranzano; nieces and nephews, Diane Bentley (Richard), Mary Latorre (Joseph), Paul Galia, Jon Galia (Laurie), Steve Maranzano (Sue), Sandra Christmas (Tom), Angela Grelle (Pete), Gary Galia (Jean), John Maranzano (Mary), Terra Pike (Dana), Lynne Galia and Alex Galia (Rosy); 21 grand nieces and nephews; one great-grand nephew and one great-grand niece. She was predeceased by two brothers, Baldssare Galia and Frank Galia and two sisters, Gertrude Maranzano and Josephine Galia. Visitation will be from 3-9 pm Friday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. There will be a 7 p.m. scripture service also on Friday evening. She will lie instate at Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, 20955 Bournemouth at Harper in Harper Woods from 9:30 a.m. Saturday until mass begins at 10 a.m.. Rev. Fr. William Herman will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit.
