Dr. Daniel William McKinley, 93, died peacefully Tuesday, December 29th. Dr. McKinley had celebrated Christmas surrounded by his entire family. Born December 19, 1916 Dr. McKinley married the love of his life, Helen Kern on June 1st, 1940 thus beginning his personal legacy. Shortly after, he graduated from Des Moines Still College of Osteopathy in Des Moines Iowa with a degree of Doctor of Osteopathy. He completed his internship at both Cadieux General Hospital and Detroit Osteopathic Hospital later serving his residency at Detroit Osteopathic Hospital. Dr. McKinley practiced medicine in his own private practice from 1943 - 1987 while raising his five children with Helen. During this time he also served the medical community in various capacities including being a member of the Board of Directors Michigan Association of Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons (MAOPS) then becoming President of the Association in 1953. He was also a member of the Development Committee of MAOPS which established the Osteopathic College of Medicine before becoming the Chairman of the Legislative Committee of MAOPS. Being the dedicated professional, he found time to be the Secretary of the Wayne County Osteopathic Association (1946-1947); Health Officer for the City of East Detroit (1947-1951); President of the Macomb County Osteopathic Association (1951-1952); Member of the Board of Directors at Bi-County Community Hospital (1966-1970) and Member of the Board of Directors of Detroit Osteopathic Hospital Corporation/Horizen Health Systems. Most recently, on October 27, 2007, Dr. McKinley was honored at the Detroit Medical Center for his lifetime of dedicated patient care and Osteopathic leadership. Of all the success he enjoyed professionally, nothing brought him more joy than being with his family. Until the end, his humor defined him. Perhaps it was his sense of humor that helped him enjoy "hunting" and "fishing". He was a former member of the Detroit Yacht Club and a living member of the Grayling Game Club in Grayling, Michigan. Dr. McKinley is survived by his children Patricia Gmeiner (the late Douglas), Peggy Gulewicz (Marty), Polly Abandond (Michael), Dan Jr. (Julie), Pamela Bylen; grandchildren Marty Gulewicz (Jeanne), Kim Ryszewski (Jim), Amy Cowan (Mike), Sara Bylen, Johnny Bylen, Daniel "Teo" McKinley; seven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
