Dorothy graduated from Hamtramck High School in 1953 and attended Meinzinger Art School in Detroit to study art, her lifelong passion. While enrolled as an art student, she began working at the Detroit Public Library as a part-time page. She remained with the Detroit Public Library for 35 years working in a variety of roles. In 1990, she retired as a Senior Clerk in the Rare Book Room where she cherished the opportunity to care for the manuscripts, first editions, and works of art within the library’s collection. Throughout her life, Dorothy generously shared her time and talents by volunteering at Our Lady Queen of Heaven Catholic Church in Detroit. This allowed her to combine her two great loves: spending time with friends and family and using her artistic abilities to create beautifully detailed crafts for sale at the annual church festival. Dorothy was devoted to her large family, selflessly caring for and sharing her gentle humor and wisdom with everyone.
She is survived by two brothers, John T. Francis Jr. (Joan), and Robert Francis (Janet); seven nieces and nephews, Michael, Darlene, Alan, Carol, Susan, Rebecca, and John Thomas; she is also survived by numerous great nieces, nephews and close friends. She is preceded in death by her brother Arthur and her sister Dolores.
