Wonderful fellow...polite, decent co-worker @ Lakeview....any time I spent with him, I walked away with a peaceful, safe, comfortable feeling. Great Guy...nice wife...an example of what it is to be a Great American.

Your recap on I'm sure only a few of the highlights of his life as well as the other comments on this page solidified who I only imagined my Great Uncle Doug to be. My only real memories of him are all good and all with a big smile on his face =) Rest In Peace Uncle Doug..

Memory lane with Uncle Doug.
My first recollection of Uncle Doug (or about anything else for that matter) was when I was 4 of 5 years old. I was sitting on the back porch of the homestead with Grampa. Doug and Don were plowing the field directly behind the house with a horse-drawn plow. Grampa was shouting out "how-to's" to them.
Every 4th of July, Gramma would host a family reunion including Grampa's siblings and their families. At one of those reunions, I recall Doug and Don taking turns running me, and I think Jim (we were known as Jimmy and Kenny at that time) around the house in a wheelbarrow. Part of that trip was running over some tree roots that were protruding from the ground. I remember the laughs we had.
A little later, I recall Doug, Don, Aunt Harriet car pooling to and from school and work in a gray Ford. I think Doug and Don were high school seniors then.
A few short years later, we were at some kind of family get-together at Aunt Eleanor's and Uncle Van's. Doug and Phyl were going to leave in the gray Ford on a date. Unbeknown to them, but known by other family members, I climbed into the gray Ford between the seats thinking that surely they would see me. Turns out they did NOT see me. Doug backed out of the driveway and started down the street. "Now what am I going to do." I exclaimed "Hey, I'm in here!!!" Doug hit the brakes, hard, in a nano-second. I flew out of the car and back to the yard like a bat out of Haiti. Of course Doug had a few words for me. The whole family was very amused and entertained (well, Doug and Phyl may not have been all that amused and entertained).
During my Little League years, Doug came to a few games with his ball glove. The ball glove was padded leather with 5 fingers but no lacing between the fingers. When was the last time you saw one of those in use? 
A few years later, Don and Louise got hitched. Doug was their Best Man. When it came time for the exchange of rings and the Ring Bearer (don't recall who that was), Doug stepped back about 6 feet to the steps to the alter, picked up the rings and proceeded back to the ceremony. Doug said later that he saw the rings fall off the cushion on the way up.
I recall a couple of Thanksgiving reunions at Doug and Phyl's on Canterbury Street. I recall watching Uncle Doug carving a huge turkey as well as a goose and/or duck (it was a water fowl). They also hosted a summer reunion which included his sister Ruth and her family. Doug served everyone an ice cream treat from the ice cream wagon he and his kids used to earn money to help with college educations.
Doug and Phyl came from Detroit to our cottage in East Tawas in 1999 to help celebrate my Mother's 80th birthday. I recall Uncle Doug complimenting me on my special deck design that I had completed literally hours before the party.
The last time I saw Uncle Doug was 2 or 3 years ago. Cheryl, my wife, and I live in San Antonio, TX. We were on our way back to Texas following a family visit to the Midwest. On our way back to Texas, we stopped by to see Doug and Phyl at their new house. At that time, Doug had been in the hospital for months being treated for colon cancer. At the time of that visit, he had been home for a few days. His voice was strong and didn't sound any different at 80 than it did when he was 50 something. He managed his walker with great authority. I was VERY impressed. I was also blown away by all the pictures that I didn't know existed of our ancestors.
So, Phyl, Steve, Mike, Greg and Cindy, I will forever cherish the memories I have of Uncle Doug.

I was so sorry to hear about Mr. Herringshaw's death. He was one of the many great teachers at Lakeview High School and always friendly and kind. I am thankful for my education at LHS thanks to teachers like Mr. Herringshaw. Prayers heading to the family. I am sorry for your loss.

i remember doug is so many ways. he was my "advanced blue print
reading" teacher which was very helpful later on in life. we worked as partners in monitoring the lunch room and most of all I remember him as a quite, considerate, and loving man and would help in any way that he could. I will be out of town so will not be able to pay my respects by being at the funeral home. May God's neverending love be with him in his new heavenly home and may God be in the midst of Phyllis during this most difficult time in her life.
