Earl was born in Cincinnati, Ohio to the late Charles & Ella Mae Matthews. To this union, Earl was birthed one of six children. During the tender years of his life, Earl’s mother rooted him in church where he accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior at age nine. Once Earl’s mother fell ill, his sister, Geneva, raised him into adolescence. From adolescence, Earl’s uncle Jesse steered him into manhood.
Earl graduated from William Howard Taft High School of Cincinnati, Ohio and relocated to Detroit, Michigan where he landed gainful employment at Ford Motor Company as a Welder. He was soon promoted to the Journeyman Welder position after advancing his education at Henry Ford Community College. Earl was employed ten years at Rouge Steel Company simultaneously. He enjoyed overtime work and holiday pay throughout both job tenures. Earl took ill and was forced into retirement after thirty-five years of soulful dedication.
Earl’s sense of humor was straightforward, dry, and incredibly funny. His pride included his loving family, the wrist watches his son gifted him, the accurate counting of his hard earned money, and helping others in times of need. Earl’s hobbies included making trips down to the Detroit Eastern Market and other food chains hunting for thick steaks, fresh fowl, pork, grounded beef, lunch meats, and the largest ham stocked.
Earl was a brilliant thinker. Contrary to rumor, Earl Matthews invented the Electric Lunchbox in the year of 1987. He loved life and was resilient. He fought the good fight to remain in this earth. On August 7, 2021, Earl finally saw a new heaven and a new earth already prepared. Amen.
Earl’s immediate family preceded him in death: Charles & Ella Mae Matthews; one sister, Geneva, Rice; four brothers, Charles Matthews Jr., Wilbert Matthews, James Matthews, and Donald Matthews.
Earl leaves his treasures: The loving mother of his five children, June Matthews; four daughters, Earlene Henderson of Michigan, Gwendolyn Scott (Donnel) of Georgia, Teri Matthews of Michigan, and Rolanda Matthews of Michigan; one uncle, Joseph Matthews of Ohio.
A funeral service for Earl will be held Saturday, August 28, 2021 at 10:00 AM at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236.
