Elisabeth Caldwell "Libby" Mistele Grosse Pointe, MI and Naples, FL Elisabeth Caldwell "Libby" Mistele of Grosse Pointe, Michigan and Naples, Florida passed away on January 20, 2014. She was 100 years old. Libby was born in Dayton, Ohio on December 3, 1913 to Elisabeth and Charles Caldwell Moore. Libby lived in the Detroit area most of her life. She graduated from the University of Michigan's School of Literature, Science & Arts in 1936 and worked as an accountant at Ernst & Ernst. On June 10, 1939, Libby married Harold Mistele in Grosse Pointe. Libby and Harold raised three boys (Henry, Charles and William). In addition to raising a family, Libby managed the accounting records for the Mistele Coal Company and was the treasurer for the Federated Women's Clubs of Detroit. She volunteered for many civic and charitable organizations, including the Grosse Pointe Women's Club, the American Association of University Women, the Kappa Delta Sorority Alumni Association, the PTA, and the Detroit Yacht Club. During the 60s, 70s and 80s, she was a devoted volunteer at Harper Hospital's diabetic clinic. Libby and Harold Mistele were active members at Covenant Baptist Church (then on James Couzens, in Detroit), and later at Bethel Baptist Church in St. Clair Shores, Michigan and First Baptist Church in Naples, Florida. As a member of the Detroit Yacht Club since 1938, she was an avid and accomplished sailor on Lake St. Clair. Libby was one of the first female skippers in what was then regarded as a gentleman's sport. Throughout the 1930s, 40s, 50s and 60s, she collected more sailing trophies and flags than most other sailors of her generation - much to the chagrin of her male competitors. Opinionated and tenacious, yet refined and generous, she brought an admirable style of dignity and grace to each day. She enjoyed good health throughout nearly all of her 100 years of life. Libby inspired her family and every heart she touched. She survived her husband (Harold) and siblings (Russell Moore and Katherine "Kitty" Moore Bunn). Surviving Libby are her three children, Henry (Sandra) of Grosse Pointe, Michigan, Charles (Diane) of Bluffton, South Carolina, and William (Anna) of Honolulu, Hawaii. She leaves nine grandchildren; Curtis (Laurinda), Bryan (Priscilla), Kevin (Katie), Michelle Long (Norris), Holly Condon (David), Brittany Tarleton (Huntley), Dianna, Benjamin and Dan. She was the proud great-grandmother of fifteen great-grandchildren. Visitation will be on Monday, February 10, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday, February 11, from 4:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack (at Vernier) in Grosse Pointe Woods. There will be viewing on Wednesday, February 12, at Bethel Baptist Church, 24600 Little Mack, St. Clair Shores from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with the funeral service starting at the church at 11:00 a.m. A reception at the church will follow the service. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army, 16130 Northland Dr., Southfield, MI 48075-9522.
