George W. McHugh

McHugh, George W. March 21, 2014 Age 90 Beloved husband of Norma. Dear father of David McHugh and Tom McHugh (Mary Lee). Loving grandfather of Max, Claire, Kelly, and Shane. Memorial visitation Sunday 2-4 pm at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods. Memorial contributions may be made to the charity of the donor's choice. Mr. McHugh was born in Boston. He was a graduate of Boston University, where he was coxswain for the rowing team. George belonged to the Grosse Pointe War Memorial Veterans Club and the Friends of Detroit Rowing Club, meeting at the Detroit Boat Club. He loved being out on the water, whether in a rowing shell, on a racing yacht or in a duck blind. He enjoyed racing and recreational sailing on Lake Saint Clair and in Florida. He took part as a crew member in numerous Port Huron to Mackinac races. He also enjoyed coaching Babe Ruth baseball in the Grosse Pointes. For many years he would hunt ducks with his sons and his friends on Harsens Island. He was also a proud WWII veteran. He enlisted on his 18th birthday in 1942, just sixty days after Pearl Harbor. He served in Britain in the U.S. Army Air Forces as a mechanic repairing B-17 bombers.
