Helen Arambages

Helen Arambages passed away on October 12, 2012 at St. John Hospital in Detroit at the age of 83. She was born on September 13, 1929 in Detroit; daughter of Nicholas and Marietta (nee Papapanagiotou) Cortis. She met Nicholas (her husband) through mutual friends. They were married on Sept. 6, 1953. She sang Soprano in the choir. As a young girl in Greece, she learned to play piano. and to be a seamstress. She first worked at the Gas Company in Detroit as a bookkeeper. She worked as a bank teller and secretary for the Safe Deposit box at the First State Bank (St. Clair Shores branch). She retired from the bank on Jan. 21, 1993. Here interests include: knitting, needlepoint, cooking, sewing, gardening, singing in the choir, mall walking, and traveling. She traveled to abroad to Egypt, the Holy Lands, Panama, Hawaii, Greece, Italy, Alaska, Netherlands. She leaves behind her two loving daughters Mary (Nick) Christian and Artemis (Scott) Kloess. She was "yia yia" to Paul (Lisa), Mark (Alyssa), Jason, and Adam. Great-Yia Yia to Evan, William, and Mason. She was predeceased by her husband Nicholas and brothers Stephen and Athanasios "Tom". Visitation will be held on Friday from 2:00 until 4:00 pm and 6:00 until 8:00 pm. A Trisagion will be held at 7:00 pm. Mrs. Arambages will lie instate on Saturday from 9:00 am until the time of the Funeral at 9:30 am at Assumption Greek Orthodox Church, 21800 Marter Rd., St. Clair Shores. Father Michael Varlamos will officiate. She will be interred next to her beloved Nicholas at Cadillac Memorial Gardens East in Clinton Twp. Memorial contributions may be made to the Church or the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org. Helen a French name meaning "Light": An individual who is very compatible; is conservative, practical, and resolute; a splendorous light; is an independent and light-hearted lady; a lady respectful to her friends and family; if she teases you, you know she likes you; has the ability to give advise wisely; has the power to influence others.
