

Irma E. Stevens, age 94, died peacefully on Sunday, November 26, 2017 at St. John Hospital & Medical Center in Detroit. Irma was born on March 16, 1923 in Detroit, the daughter of Bernard and Dorothea Longhi. She grew up on Bishop Avenue in Detroit and graduated high school from St. Paul. She attended Michigan State University for two years before becoming an airline stewardess for TWA Airlines. In 1946 Irma Longhi married Ralph W. Stevens, Jr. at St. Matthew Catholic Church in Detroit. Shortly after, the young couple moved to Grosse Pointe Woods where they raised their family and she resided for the remainder of her life. Irma was a patron of the arts. She was a docent at the Detroit Institute of Arts for over 30 years, well into her 80's. She was also a docent at the Edsel & Eleanor Ford House in Grosse Pointe Shores, a member of the Grosse Pointe Questers, the former Nomads Travel Club and Lochmoor Club. She was an extremely proud and confident woman in all that she did. She was the common thread that kept the Stevens family closely knit. She was a wonderful cook who also enjoyed travel, golf, boating, cards, music, dancing and spending time with her family. Her grandchildren fondly remember playing cards, "dress-up" , walking to Sweeney park, learning to play a few tunes on the piano and making memories together at Grandmas house. Irma is survived by her four sons: Ralph W. III (Shari), Michael (Mary Kirk), Mark (Pamela) and Robert (Colleen) and nine grandchildren: Kate, Peter, Christine, Ashley, Kimberly, Jessica, Scott, Jacqueline, and Molly. She was affectionately known as "Gigi" by her great-grandchildren: Reece, Dylan and Cohen. She was predeceased by her husband Ralph in 1984. The family will receive friends from 2:00 to 8:00 PM Friday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. The Holy Rosary will be recited at 7:00 PM Friday evening. Her body will lie instate at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 467 Fairford at Morningside, Grosse Pointe Woods from 9:30 AM Saturday until mass begins at 10:00 AM. Monsignor Gary Smetanka will officiate. Interment will follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit. The family has suggested memorials contributions be directed to Alzheimers Association , 225 N. Michigan Ave., Fl. 17, Chicago, IL 60601.
