

Jim Burger, age 69 died unexpectedly on Monday, August 30 at Wm. Beaumont Hospital in Grosse Pointe. Mr. Burger was born on October 3, 1940 in Detroit, the son of Carl F. and Clara Burger. He graduated Denby High School in 1954 and went on to graduate from Wayne State University with a Bachelor's degree and later a Master's degree. For several years he worked with his father at the C. F. Burger Creamery in Detroit. In 1965 he married Karen Martin at Bethany Lutheran Church in Detroit. Jim was an educator and took pride in helping others through education. He had a special, unique personality that gave him the tools to communicate with his students of all ages. He took a philosophical approach to life and shared his wisdom with family and friends alike. His family describes him as charming, fun loving and outgoing. Through Jim's career, he taught at several Detroit High Schools including Denby, Finney, Cooley, Henry Ford and Cass Technological. He finished his tenure at the Southfield High School in 2006. His subjects were English, French and psychology. After retirement, Jim and Karen moved to the Villages in Florida. They also enjoyed a summer home in London, Ontario, Canada. Teaching was his life, but he found time to enjoy sports of all types including tennis, table tennis and particularly the Detroit Red Wings. Jim is survived by his wife of 45 years, Karen; their children, Cheryl Good (Lionel) of Grosse Pointe Woods; Brian Burger (Tracy) of Davison, MI and Greg of Florida; four grandchildren, Bella, Nicolas, Isaac and Alex; and his brother Charles (Susie). Visitation will be held from 1:00 to 9:00 pm Wednesday, September 1 at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, in Grosse Pointe Woods.
