Jane C. Summers, age 101, a resident of Beechwood Manor in St. Clair Shores, died peacefully on November 6, 2013. A Michigan native, Jane was born on March 18, 1912 in Leesville, on the east side of Detroit, the daughter of James A. and Susannah B. Cooper. She graduated from Southeastern High School in 1929 and from the University of Michigan in 1933. She became a substitute teacher during the Great Depression and upon receiving a master's degree from Wayne State in 1940, started her teaching career. Jane spent the next 30 years teaching Social Studies and US and World History at Jackson Junior High, retiring in 1971. She and her husband William, an Ophthalmologist and Ear, Nose and Throat physician were some of the "original" tenants at Lakeshore Village before moving to Grosse Pointe Shores where they lived for 42 years. During World War II, Jane was a Red Cross volunteer at Harper Hospital, changing bed pans for the wounded. She also taught Sunday School at the Church of Our Savior Episcopal Church in Detroit. Jane loved to garden and play the stock market. She was good at both! In their younger years, Jane and her husband enjoyed golfing at the Essex Golf and Country Club in Windsor; and playing bridge with three other couples every month and on New Year's Eve. Jane is survived by many loving nieces and nephews. Having had no children of her own, she was very generous to her sibling's offspring and on down the line. Her kindness will be remembered by all. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. William A. Summers; her brothers, Dr. James B. Cooper and Robert Cooper; and her sister, Margaret Jones. Private memorial activities are being planned.
