The angels have called Jenny (Granata) Catalfio home on April 22nd, 2024. She peacefully left us following a brief illness. Born June 16, 1927 in Memphis, TN, she migrated north to Detroit with her family while she was still an infant. She was proud to note that she grew up on Fort Street and Hastings, the area known as “The Black Bottom”.
She met the love of her life, Joe Catalfio, at a wedding where she was working as a coat check attendant. During that time her father, Luigi, cooked for many events in the Italian community. Following marriage in 1945, she had one son, Bart, born in 1953 and a full term daughter, Christine, who was stillborn in 1958.
Jenny was widowed in a tragic boating accident in 1978. This did not keep her from radiating the special joy she had for her family, and for life. In 2017, she moved to Ypsilanti and made friendships with her new community at Cross Street Village, and as a member of Huron Valley PACE. She touched the lives of countless people, whom after meeting her, always left feeling a bit better about themselves.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Luigi and Josephine Granata; her siblings, Vince, Sam, Charlie, Lucy, and Mary; as well as her husband Joseph. In addition to her son, Bart, she leaves behind three cherished grandchildren, Jami, Joe (Sarah), and Amanda; Five adored great-grandchildren, Jameson, Jaiden, Vincenzo, Annabella, and Jackson; as well as many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in her name to Angela Hospice (https://angelahospice.org/donate/)
A Memorial Service will be held for Jenny on Sunday, June 2nd, 2024 at 6PM, at Cross Street Village Community Center, 210 West Cross Street Ypsilanti, MI 48197.
