

John W. Hopper, age 74, died peacefully on December 19, 2013 at St. John Macomb Hospital in Warren. John was born on August 25, 1939 in Paris, Tennessee, the son of Toy and Lillian Hopper. His family moved to the Detroit area when he was young, and he graduated from Ferndale High School in 1959. John served his country in the US Marine Corps and was discharged in June of 1960. In 1961 he married Beverly Hill at the First Methodist Church in Hazel Park. John was employed at several different jobs during his working career. He enjoyed his time at AMT making die cast toy cars. He worked over 30 years at Stolaruk Trucking as a gravel hauler. He was a proud member of the Teamsters, Local 247. John retired in December of 2012. His family described him as a hard worker, who never missed a day at work. His great work ethic carried over in his personal life and he passed along life lessons to his grandchildren. John was a handyman, has a passion for fixing up old cars, and was a people watcher. He was a simple man who enjoyed his family and took great pride in his grandchildren. He was also known to have a sweet tooth. John is survived by his loving wife, Beverly, their three daughters; Tracey Barthel (Mike), Jody Otto and Candice Sawyer (Joseph); their grandchildren, Justin, Becky, Matt, Kaitlyn and Shelley; and his twin brother, Joe Hopper (Pat). He was predeceased by his parents and his sister, Mary Lingerfelt. Visitation will be held from 2:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. His body will lie instate at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church from 11:30 a.m. Monday until mass begins at 12 noon. Interment will be private at White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy.
