

of Grosse Pointe Shores, left our world in the early morning of June 4, 2022 after a brief illness at home.
Mr. Lutz was born in Brooklyn, New York in 1919 and attended P.S.102 Queens, and Newton High School in New York. He then graduated from Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) in 1940 with his degree in Engineering.
With the onset of World War II he enlisted in the U. S. Navy and attended Officer Candidate School at Princeton University in New Jersey. He was an Engineering Officer on LST 651 which first carried the Marines at the Invasion of Okinawa. In August 1945 he was appointed Ship Photographer.
He was released from active duty in 1946 but stayed in the Naval Reserves until he was recalled to the USS Adria in 1951 for the Korean War. He officially retired in June 1964 after 22 years of service with the rank of Full Commander
John spent his civilian years with various automotive corporations finally retiring in 1986 as Chairman of the Board of McCord Corpoation in Detroit.
John married Katherine in 1972 and enjoyed 49 years together until her passing in May of last year. They met when she worked at General Motors and he was at McCord.
Mr. Lutz is survived by his daughter, Jacalyn Margittay (and Daniel Karnopp), of Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin and her daughter Nichja (David) Yeaman of El Cerrito, California. Also grieving is his Grandson Joey (Sarah) Gitzen and his two great-grandchildren, Gabriel and Genesis.
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to Renee Menefield and Cheryl Michoski for their many years of care and dedication.
A funeral service for John will be held Wednesday, June 8, 2022 at 12:00 PM at AHPeters, 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236.
