

John F. Weiksnar, M.D., was born on September 23, 1923 in Buffalo, NY to Joseph and Charlotte Weiksnar. He attended Canisius High School and Canisius College. His medical degree was received at the University of Buffalo. After completing his medical training he served in the Korean War for 1 and years as a 1st Lieutenant in a MASH unit with the Army. When he returned from the war he went to the United Mine Workers Hospital in Whitesburg, Kentucky as Chief of Surgery. After five years, he became chief surgeon at the newly started (HMO) Metropolitan Hospital in Detroit. This small hospital was later taken over by the Henry Ford Medical System where he remained chief surgeon until his retirement in 1989. He was the beloved husband of Otillia and a wonderful father to Mary Margaret (deceased), John (Ginger), Kathryn (Patrick), Elizabeth (Michael), Thomas (Jodi), and Christina (Gordon). He was proud of his grandchildren Matthew, Megan, Sam, Alex, Max, David, Natalie, Kate, Bryan, LiAn, Sophia, Andrew, Heidi and Kyle. He is survived by his brother Ted and his sisters Esther and Wanda. His family will receive friends on Sunday June 12th from 2:00 - 8:00 pm at A.H. Peters Funeral Home 20705 Mack Ave., at Vernier Rd., Grosse Pointe Woods. A Mass of the Resurrection will be held on Monday, June 13th, at 11:00 am at St. Ambrose Catholic Church 15020 Hampton Rd., Grosse Pointe Park. Father Timothy Pelc will officiate. Entombment will be at Resurrection Cemetery immediately after military honors are performed. Memorial contributions may be made to Canisius College, 2001 Main St., Buffalo, NY 14208.
