Jose Miguel Cosio was born in Camaguey, Cuba in 1931. One of three children, Miguel was a serious student from a very young age. He went on to study medicine and graduated at the top of his class, earning his medical degree from the Universidad de la Habana in 1955. Jose met Sira, his beloved wife of 60 years, in 1951 at the Country Club of Havana, at the club's ping pong table on a sunny afternoon in July. The two dated while he completed his medical education in Havana. Jose and Sira were married on September 25, 1955 at Corpus Christi Catholic Church in Havana, and subsequently moved to Dayton, Ohio where Jose began his medical internship training. They returned to Havana, Cuba in 1956, where their first child, Joseph Michael (now deceased) was born. Jose resumed his residency training in Worcester, Massachusetts, and while there, Jose and Sira's two daughters, Mary and Maggie, were born. Upon completion of his residency Jose and his family moved to Grosse Pointe Woods where Jose and Sira had two more children, Mark and Melisa. In 1962, Jose accepted a position in the pathology department of St. Joseph's Hospital in Mount Clemens. His work at St. Joseph's was highly respected, and he was known by those who worked with him for his passionate and dedicated work ethic, but more importantly, his compassionate and caring attitude towards patients and co-workers. Eventually serving as the hospital's Chief of Pathology, Jose retired after 35 years of service and received the hospital's prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award upon his retirement in 1995. Though a dedicated professional, Jose was better known as a husband, father and grandfather. He was an amazing dancer, a lover of classical music and classic novels, an accomplished baker, and well-known as the host of many Latin celebrations at the Cosio home. Jose was a lover of the outdoors. He enjoyed tennis, bike riding and running and became a recognized daily fixture on Lake Shore Drive. His true outdoor passion was snow skiing, and he and his family spent numerous memorable weekends and holidays up north at their home at Schuss Mountain. Later in life, he developed a love for sailing and spent hours on the waters of Lake St. Clair with his family on their boat, La Paloma (The Dove). Throughout their marriage, Jose and Sira were fortunate to spend time traveling. The two took many memorable trips together, walking the Great Wall of China, climbing to Machu Picchu, swimming in the Dead Sea, exploring villages in Argentina, as well as many other fabulous adventures around the world. Jose is remembered by his wife, children and grandchildren as "happy, athletic, dedicated, devoted, hard-working, funny, smart, strong, kind and caring."
