Longtime resident of Grosse Pointe, Michigan and later of Naples, Florida, Julia (Julie) Blossom Whitney died on February 5, 2014 at the age of 83. Her family and many friends appreciated Julie's warmth, love of life, gift of laughter and her ability to face all aspects of life with dignity. Julie was born July 11, 1930 in Detroit, Michigan to Phillip (Flip) Moss Blossom and Grace Gillespie Blossom. She graduated from the Liggett School and received her college degree from Finch in New York. In her career as a graphic artist for J. Walter Thompson and Campbell-Ewald, Julia was considered a female pioneer for her time in the advertising world. She continued her career in marketing for the Liggett School and its successor, the University Liggett School. Upon her marriage to Charles Robert Whitney in the fall of 1971, Julie was thrilled to inherit an immediate family in Marcia, Chuck, Jane and Tracy Whitney. During her life in Grosse Pointe, Julie dedicated her time and talents as an artist and writer in years of volunteer work for the Tau Beta Association, an organization close to her heart. She photographed, wrote and helped publish the association's paper, the "Black and White". She was also a longtime member of the Junior League of Detroit and the Society of Mayflower Descendants. Later, Julie and her husband, Chuck, moved to Florida where they resided for many years but continued spending summers in Grosse Pointe to be close to family and friends. Julie also loved spending time at the family cottage in Mitchell's Bay, Ontario where one of her favorite pastimes was bass fishing in the bay. Mrs. Whitney is survived by her loving sister, Mary Ann Bourke Connolly (Robert); step children, Marcia Lockwood Whitney, Charles Robert Whitney, Jr. (Gina Baubie), Jane Whitney Gage (Jen Bradford), Tracy Whitney Howe as well as nephew, Scott Atkins, niece, Julie Atkins Tzobanakis and step niece, Bethine Standart Whitney. She is also survived by nine step grandchildren, four step great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles R. Whitney, Sr. All the family gratefully acknowledges the wonderful and dedicated caregivers who supplied Julia with such great care and comfort during her illness.
