Julie "Jewels" Strate (nee Smith), age 46, passed away on June 14, 2018 in Detroit after a hardened battle with cancer. Julie was born on Monday, June 28, 1971 to Nancy and Glenn Smith. Julie was a graduate of Oakland University earning her bachelor's degree in Computer Science. She immensely enjoyed camping and spending time outdoors. She also loved gardening and tended to several beautiful flower gardens at her home. Julie was also an avid movie buff, collecting a large DVD library. She loved Star Wars, Steven Segal Films and the Bourne Film Series as well as others. Julie was very also active in her daughter Rachel's school at Francois Maconce Elementary in the Parent Teacher Guild, and she was the Girl Scout Cookie Mom as well. Most importantly Julie loved her family and spending time with family and friends. She loved spending time watching TV or movies with daughter Rachel, planning a vacation or activity with husband Derek, and attending diverse events ranging from Monster Truck Jam to Sound of Music at The Fox Theater. A quiet person, she was selfless and very considerate of others. Her mild manner did not tame her ability to light up a room with her smile, pursue things she wanted to accomplish with a passion or stand up for things she believed in! The organizer and financial coordinator of her home, she was also the glue that bound all the loose ends together. She was a valiant woman and her strength and spirit will be missed by many. Beloved wife of Derek married Saturday, April 12, 2003 at St. Peter Lutheran Church in Eastpointe. Loving Mother of Rachel her "Bunny". Dearest daughter of Nancy (Kirk) Bliss and the late Glenn Smith. Loved sister of Robert Smith, Jason (Whitney) Bliss, and the late Brian Smith. Best friend of Doug and Dawn Daniels.
