Born February 10, 1946 to the late Arthur J. Honn and Dorothy (Krych) Honn. Amazing brother to Pamela (Gordon) Ware, Kathy (Bill) Bremerkamp, and Doreen (Jeff) Miechiels; loving and devoted husband to Caryn (Volpe). Brother-in-law of Jamie (Fay) Volpe and uncle to Alexandra Bremerkamp, Mary (Jake) Prange, Kendall Volpe, Abby Volpe and Peter Volpe. Father to Kathryn Honn.
Dr. Honn was a proud alumnus of De La Salle Collegiate High School (class of 1963), where he was the founder of the Centerline Rocket Club, played football and ran track and field. Dr. Honn received his doctoral degree in endocrinology from Wayne State University in 1977. Following graduate training, he was hired as an assistant professor of radiology. Four years later, he was promoted to associate professor of radiology and radiation oncology and was promoted to professor in 1984 and awarded the title of Distinguished Professor in radiation oncology in 2004 and later in pathology.
Ken became an avid world traveler throughout his career, as he presented scientific talks at prominent academic institutions. A self-taught landscaper at an early age, he created a relaxing woodland garden at his home, providing the feeling that you are strolling through a Northern Michigan forest, with the added feature of a Koi pond with cascading waterfalls. Ken had a love for the great outdoors, including charter boat fishing for salmon and lake trout out of Fishtown (Leland) in Lake Michigan’s Sleeping Bear Bay or pheasant hunting at Hunters Creek (Metamora).
Ken was a voracious reader, a scholar and political junkie. He was always eager to share his knowledge and expertise with family, friends, colleagues, eager students, or the person dining next to him. He leaves behind a legacy of discussing the “Resolution of Inflammation”, the root cause of most diseases, to anyone who would listen and learn.
He was a quintessential renaissance man. He argued for the importance of one’s choices, and how they shape our lives, hence his favorite poem is “The Road Not Taken” by Robert Frost.
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
