 we often talked about this, and lindell my mom died in august of 2014 so trust me i know your pain... i liked gene and he liked me.. we lost touch but if u still have my number give me a shout..all is well and isaiah is in college now and a job. gene was soo nice to me and we always had good conversation when i would drive him to airport....i remeber the first day he had me pick you up from the airport lindell, wow just wow. i still cant belive my moms gone... now gene.. like we talked about lindell we both knew that day would come. i hope u are ok and well. i often wonderd did this dreadfull day happen well i guess i have my answer.
but i promise you lindell we will see them again...ps

To Genes Family, You all should read the incredible memories that were posted on the Facebook page, "I grew up in Grosse Pointe, Michigan" when news of Gene's passing was noted on there on December 4. Gene was a genuinely nice person and will be remembered by all he touched.

Lindell and family, My family loved Uncle Gene. He and "Aunt Tex" were my uncle and aunt. My dad (Lee Andary) said Aunt Tex was like a third sister. Thus, I always called him Uncle Gene and he was at every family gathering; usually bringing that antique metal Coca Cola cooler that kids (me) could steal a pop out of. He also would give me free candy when I was a kid and road my bike to his party store. As I got older I appreciated him just as much. He always had a smile on his face, even when he was beating me at bocce ball at the Andary picnic or in your summer parties in his backyard. My dad said about Gene "He did not know evil". He was a great man.

Uncle Gene, I'll never forget the first of many Blatz beers I had with you in a bowling alley in Detroit! Rest in peace.

Dear Lindell and family, My memories of you dad and mom are simply some of the warmest of our shared youth. Your dad was just simply a unique gentleman in the truest sense of the word. My thoughts are with you and your family. By the way, the picture of your dad in the GP News really captured him perfectly. Best, Joe Collins

I remember Gene as such a kind and caring man. I was a friend of Lindell growing up. Such fond memories of him and Tex. I was saddened to read of his death, but know he will rest in peace. My heart and prayers are with you and your family, Lindell.

Gene was a genial, wise and friendly man who made everyone feel welcome in his store. It was a "destination" for kids of my era (60's). We rode our bikes to Gene's from home, the Pier, or parts unknown. A penny was enough, but of course a quarter was a treasure. I recall many times, as a mere 8 or 9 year old, hopping up on the cooler directly across from his sales counter, and carrying on a conversation with Gene about almost anything. You felt older than your years when you were in his store somehow. He treated kids not as kids, but as people, and he really enjoyed the dialogue, if he wasn't busy. He truly was unique, and there may never be someone like him again. My condolences to the family.

He never called me by my given name. He called me "Hayes". I guess that is because my brothers Neil, James, John, and Mark all frequented the store over time as much as I did. When I saw that Patty Claycomb, my old friend, classmate, and neighbor had posted the news of Gene's death, my mind raced back to those GREAT (not just good) old days. I won't repeat all others have said but I will say that hanging out in front with a bottle of pop and some penny pretzels after some sports practice or before heading over to Danny Griffin's house or whatever else it was that the agenda called for, Gene's was a starting or stopping point in all our lives. We all loved Gene (and Tex of course) and we were well loved by him. I am certain that God welcomed him through the gates of heaven along with his stash of Black Jacks and Mary Janes. The good Lord has, invariably, a sweet tooth too. RIP.

All of my memories of growing up in Grosse Pointe Farms include Gene and his family. Tex was the godmother of the class of 71 and Gene was an icon to kids all over the town. His store was an important milestone for each of us on the road to adulthood. He was the example we were lucky to know. Lindell please know you are in my thoughts!

Gene was a true pleasure to know. A successsful, generous, supportive, courageous, kind and loving man. He was a gentle man who will be missed by many. A great friend.

Uncle Gene, growing up during those summers in the 60's in Grosse Pointe, were made extra special when, after you would close the store for the night, you would come home, sit out on the back porch, and play your guitar and sing with that beautiful voice. Your songs are still in my heart. Thank you for opening up your home to me and my family during those days. They are some of my sweetest memories. I will miss you not being in this world, but I look forward to seeing you, Aunt Adele and Billy on the other side. In the meantime, sing a song for Mom and Dad up there. They always loved your songs too. I promise, I will check on your Doll. Love you! MARGARET â¤ï¸

It has been quite an honor to be part of Gene's family, as his son-in-law since 1986. Gene was one of the kindest, most caring and generous people I have ever met. I am so grateful for our many wonderful family times together and for the fine example he set for all of us and our children. Thank you, Gene.

You will forever be in our hearts, Grandpa. Thank you for your endless generosity, support, and love. We love being your granddaughters. All our love.
