Mary S. Witt

Mary S. Witt, age 100, died peacefully on December 9, 2011 at her home in the American House in Westland. Mary was born on May 9, 1911 in Scranton, Pennsylvania; the daughter of Joseph and Catherine Sumilas. Mary came to Detroit in 1933 with her brother and his family. She began working as a waitress at the Broadway Market in downtown Detroit. She met her future husband, William W. Witt who was also employed at the market. After they married, they started the poultry counter at the market and made their living together until retirement in the mid 1960's. Shortly after, Bill became the superintendent of Gethsemane Cemetery in Detroit, where they moved into a residence on the cemetery grounds. They lived and worked at the cemetery from 1967 to 1974 when they retired again and moved to Harper Woods. In the year 2000, Mary moved to the American House in Westland. Mary and Bill traveled extensively seeing all 50 states, much of Europe and especially Germany. They also enjoyed cruises. Mary's hobbies included knitting, playing bridge and volunteering at Bon Secours Hospital in Grosse Pointe. She found satisfaction in helping others less fortunate than herself, especially shut-ins. And she was an active member at St. Paul Ev. Lutheran Church. Mary was predeceased by her beloved husband Bill in 1990. She is survived by her loving nieces and nephews: Ted Marchuck (Cindy), Randall Marchuck (Linda), Scott Marchuck (Karen), James Dick (Virginia), Alfred Dick (Patricia), Carol Boshears (James), John Sumilas (Judy), Joseph Sumilas (Alicia) and Michael Kaminskas (Marie). She also leaves numerous great nieces and nephews and great-great nieces and nephews. Visitation for Mary will be held from 10:00 o'clock Monday morning until her funeral service begins at 11:00 o'clock at St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 375 Lothrop at Chalfonte in Grosse Pointe Farms. Rev. Frederick Harms will officiate. Interment will be at Gethsemane Cemetery in Detroit. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to St. Paul Evangelical Lutheran Church, 375 Lothrop, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236.
