

Philip A. Simon, age 75, died peacefully on June 6, 2013 after an extended bout with Alzheimer's. Phil was born on April 11, 1938 in Detroit, the son of Richard and Sally Simon. Phil grew up on Detroit's eastside and graduated from St. Joseph High School in 1955. In 1962, Phil married Doris Cornwell at St. Bernard Church in Detroit. Mr. Simon and his father opened a retail auto parts store in Detroit and the same time he continued his education and graduated from the University of Detroit with a Bachelor's Degree in Business, Summa Cum Laude, in 1971. The Richards Automotive Centers thrived for over 50 years and had locations in Detroit and Warren. Phil will be remembered for being a faithful, generous human being who financially helped many people through the years. He was dedicated to his wife, his children and grandchildren and his parents. He provided them with every opportunity to advance and was always ready to give advice. Phil was an active member at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church. He taught in the Exception Children's program where he was known as "Mr. Coffee." He was involved in the church's festival for many years and was the general chairman at one time. He was a member of the church's St. Vincent de Paul conference and the Alhambra. He liked golf, traveling, camping, baseball, bowling, shooting craps and playing cards. Mr. Simon is survived by his loving wife Doris; their four children, Cheryl, Nancy Velez (Raymond), Richard (Debra) and Gregory (Lacey); ten grandchildren; his brother Ronald Simon (Theresa); and sister, Mary Ann Simon. Visitation will be held from 2:00 to 9:00 pm Sunday and 2:00 to 8:00 pm Monday at the A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road in Grosse Pointe Woods. A scripture service will be held at 7 o'clock Monday evening. His body will lie instate at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church, 21620 Greater Mack at Overlake in St. Clair Shores from 9:30 am Tuesday until mass begins at 10:00 am. Monsignor G. Michael Bugarin will officiate. Military honors will follow the mass at Church. Interment will be at Resurrection Cemetery in Clinton Township. The family has requested memorial donations be made to either the St. Vincent de Paul, St. Joan of Arc Conference, 22412 Overlake, St. Clair Shores, MI 48080 or to Building Bridges, 3475 Dorothea Court, Troy, MI 48084.
