

Jerry was born on February 12, 1935 to Barbara and Philip A. Tannian in Detroit, Michigan. He has a sister Patricia (Pat) Tannian. On January 18, 1965, he married Beverly Kovacsity and went on to have five children. Kathleen Marrocco, Mary (Molly) Tannian, Julie Fentner, Philip (PJ) Tannian and Genevieve (Gen) Tannian. He has six grandchildren, Timothy Moehring, Megan Moehring, Andrew Moehring, Noah Marrocco, Eleanor (Ellie) Tannian, and Philip (Liam) Tannian. He has one great-grandchild, Oliver Moehring (Timothy’s son).
After Jerry graduated from University of Detroit High School in 1953, he went on to graduate from the University of Notre Dame in 1957. He enlisted in the United States Navy and served as a Line Officer and Engineering Officer for seven years. He then graduated from the Detroit College of Law in 1963. He was proud to be an agent with the Federal Bureau of Investigation in Washington, Baltimore, Philadelphia and Detroit from 1963 to 1967. He was the Executive Assistant to the Prosecuting Attorney, County of Wayne from 1967-1969, the Deputy Controller of the City of Detroit in 1970, Executive Secretary to the Mayor of the City of Detroit from 1970-1973. In 1973 he was appointed as the Police Commissioner of the Detroit Police Department and then in 1974 became the Chief of Police for the Detroit Police Department until 1977. From 1977 to the present, he was a practicing Environmental Attorney.
A visitation for Philip will be held Thursday, November 2, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 8:00 PM at A. H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236. A rosary will occur Thursday, November 2, 2023 at 7:00 PM, 20705 Mack Ave, Grosse Pointe Woods, MI 48236.
An instate will occur Friday, November 3, 2023 at 9:30 AM until time of funeral mass at 10:00 AM at St. Paul on the Lake, 157 Lake Shore, Grosse Pointe Farms, MI 48236.
