Samuel "Sam" Douglas Born in Belfast, Ireland on October 2, 1922, departed on November 27, 2014 and resided in Grosse Pointe Woods, Michigan. Sam Douglas, 92, passed away on November 27, 2014 in his sleep on Thanksgiving Day morning. Sam was born in Belfast, Ireland to parents Samuel and Violet. He was their only child. When Sam was one year of age his parents left Ireland for the United States and settled in Detroit. At age 19 Sam was drafted into the Army, one month after being engaged to the love of his life, Shirley. He served 3 years during WWII in the Philippines and New Guinea as an engineer for the Army Corps of Engineers. After his honorable discharge he returned to Detroit in December, 1945. He and Shirley were married the following July. Sam worked at Frisbee Corporation, then moved on to Cross Company as a Project Engineer where, after 30 years of service, he retired. Sam, while at Cross Company, took it upon himself to learn greetings and salutations in five different languages so he could greet his coworkers in their native tongue. Sam enjoyed many hobbies and he was an incessant tinkerer who could fix anything. If he could not find a part to repair something, he made it. He was a Lapidary and cut and faceted his own gem stones. He made beautiful jewelry from gold and silver, as well as many objet d'art that he displayed at numerous War Memorial art fairs. He was an accomplished painter and artist who worked in multiple media, and was a long standing member of the Grosse Pointe Artists' Association. He was an inventor who, with a close friend, patented and produced many things. Sam was a nature lover and a sportsman who loved to duck hunt with his friends. He was a great humorist and story teller who regaled his friends and family with jokes and stories from his many adventures. Beloved husband of Shirley for 68 years. Dear father of Kimberly VanElst (Gary) and Colleen Stevens (Robert, DDS). Loving grandfather of Brandon, Darren, Ashley and Scott. Great-grandfather of Austin and Kenna. Sam was blessed to have many close friends that comprised the "Gang", 22 in all, who for over 60 years would come up with any excuse to get together. Visitation Sunday 3-8 p.m. at the A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods. In state Monday 10:30 a.m. until time of funeral service 11:00 a.m. at First English Lutheran Church, 800 Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods. Interment at White Chapel Cemetery.
