

Sidney J. Hirschfield, 93, died Friday, October 24, 2014. He was born July 1, 1921 in Detroit to Sidney and Ann Hirschfield, graduated from De La Salle High School and earned a Bachelor of Science and MBA degree from the University of Detroit in 1957. He was invited as a member of the Beta Gamma Sigma Fraternity, an honorary society recognizing business excellence. He enlisted in the United States Army and served as Staff Sergeant in the Pacific Theatre during World War II. He received the Victory Medal, the Asiatic Pacific Theater Medal with three Battle Stars, the Philippine Liberation Ribbon with a Battle Star, two Overseas Service Bars, a Service Stripe, and a Good Conduct Ribbon. He played the piano at a young age and was an accomplished pianist. He played piano on the South American, a cruise ship making trips through the Great Lakes after his military service. He continued to play piano, recently with the Grosse Pointe Senior Men's Orchestra, The Music Makers in numerous musical events at various senior citizens homes, and with his family during the holidays. He married Virginia (nee Stadelman) in 1950 at St. Catherines in Detroit. His wife predeceased him; dear father of Charles (Susan deceased), Thomas (Kathleen), Patricia D'Angelo (Paul), James, Ann Dion (Mark), John (Stephanie); loving Grandfather to Ann Wenzel, Matthew Hirschfield (Karen), David Wenzel, Jaclyn Hirschfield, Andrew Dion (Christy), Laura Dion, TJ Hirschfield, Teddy Hirschfield, Christopher D'Angelo (Elisa), and Corie Werich (Michael); Great Grandfather to Gabi, Felix, and Winn; loving companion to Doris Trupiano, her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. He is survived by his siblings, Alan (Nicole) and Lawrence (Reba). His sister Virginia Naour predeceased him. After working at the U.S. Department of Labor and serving as Assistant Director of Placement at The University of Detroit, he went to work for Chrysler Corporation in 1957 as a Management Recruiter. He moved up to serve as Manager of Personnel, Chrysler Corporation Central Office, and later Director of the Chrysler Institute and Director, Organizational Development. Mr. Hirschfield served as Lecturer for the University of Detroit MBA Program, and was a President of the Alumni Association, awarded the Tower Award for his outstanding service. He was a member of The Midwest College Placement Association, The Industrial Relations Research Association, The Detroit Personnel Management Association, The Board of Trustees at the Detroit Institute of Commerce, and The Board of Directors at Gilreath Manufacturing. Mayor Roman Gribbs declared July 1, 1970 as Sidney J. Hirschfield Day in the City of Detroit. He was a member of The Chrysler Management Club, St. Clair Country Club, and a lifelong member of Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish in Grosse Pointe Woods, where he served as Chairman of Lectors, Parish Council, and Lay Minister. Visitation will be at A.H. Peters Funeral Home, 20705 Mack Avenue at Vernier Road, Grosse Pointe Woods on Wednesday, October 29 from 2pm-9pm with wake service at 7:00 pm. A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, October 30 at 9:30am, with a memorial mass at 10am at Our Lady Star of the Sea Catholic Church, 467 Fairford Road, Grosse Pointe Woods.
