Terribly sorry that we didn't even hear of Dr. Tom's passing till after his funeral, all because of our prologned power outage here in Royal Oak. Can't say that I really had the opportunity to get to know him, but even with the limited time I ever spent with him at your house, it was obvious that he was an extreemly intelligent & articulate person, I would have loved to know better.
We are truly saddened by your loss of this incredibly bright & highly respected young man, especially in light of your all too recent loss of his brother, Peter. We feel certain that you two will trust in God to guide you through this very difficult time, knowing too that your many friends, (us included), will be offering our prayers for your guidance, strength & serenity in this situation.

Words cannot express the feeling I felt when I heard the news. Dr. Williams, you were one of my favorites to work with. You were always so nice and always asked how I was and that it was nice to see me when I was working. I will miss you, but find comfort in knowing that you are no longer suffering. You deserve to be at peace. This isn't goodbye, but see you later. I was never able to come to a Dr. Williams party since I always worked when you had one, but get the party started for us and we will meet you there later on. Take care Dr. Williams and I'll see ya on the other side.

Dr Williams was extraordinary. He never let an EMS crew feel as if our opinions didnt matter. He always listened and asked questions. After he always gave us praise with a "good job Brother". He made us feel IMPORTANT! RIP Brother!

I took care of Dr. Williams when he was in the CCU @ Beaumont Grosse Pointe, this last time and a few years ago. He was always so cheery, asking questions about me-it was never about him. He would tell me cool history facts, and we'd talk about mutual physicians that we knew. He never complained. I remember the pile of mail and bills he was doing in his bed, and we were laughing that there wasn't a shredder big enough for all of his mail! I'm so sorry to hear he passed. My thoughts are with you .

So sad to hear of Tom's passing. I had the privilege of knowing him during my residency. We did an MICU rotation together whle I was a first year Family Medicine resident. He definitely made that rotation more enjoyable and also educational. I'm glad I had the opportunity to get to know him during that short time.

Dear Thomas and Shirley, 
I am saddened to hear of Tom's passing. My memories from medical school include Tom, he always greeted me with a smile and a compliment. He was a kind soul and a true gentleman. I can only imagine he will be greatly missed.

Dr. Williams always took the time to explain and teach no matter who you were. I had the great pleasure of working with him and he could always find a way to put a smile on your face. Tom was a great man. Even when he was sick he never slowed down and he wouldn't let it get him down. Henry Ford has lost one of their best. I think he had a major role in my drive to follow my dreams, to keep learning, and always bettering myself. He had a tremendous impact on my life and I'm sure on countless others.

Tom was a kind, gentle and very generous young man. He was always easy to talk with and we always enjoyed his company. We will miss him dearly.

To my old friend and classmate, Tom: I am so sorry for your loss. You might not know that I come from a CF family and have lost 3 siblings years ago.

The thing I admired most about Tom was his love of life, and people. Perhaps it was his constant, nagging issues with his health that gave him his exuberance and obvious appreciation for the beauty and fragility of life, but whatever the reason it was infectious and admirable.
I'm gonna miss this guy! I've never known anyone who could so easily befriend people from such a broad range of ages and backgrounds. I remember one time where he was in his late 20s where he told me he was headed over to a friend's retirement party from the FBI the following day. I remember first thinking he was joking, then realizing it was just another example of how he embraced such a diverse group of friends. (Come to think of it, I'm still not entirely sure if he was kidding or not...: ) with Tom you could never really be sure)
His caring, genuinely interested manner was disarming and immediately likable. Once he added the suffix "-ers" to the end of your name (e.g. Jocers) with his huge smile and singsong voice it was impossible to feel anything but love for him.
I was always entertained by listening him talk to people. His second or third question was usually "what's your heritage?" Once he learned that (if he could not guess it from looks or sir name) he would rattle off some comment laced with on point historical references to the history of whichever continent the person mentioned. No-one else could work the words "That face bears the mark of centuries of Turkish angst" into a conversation in a loud bar with person he barely met.
I'll miss the spontaneous vibrato laced songs in any number of languages that could happen at any point in the day including before the sun came up on a shift in the ER.
This man was one of the good ones. He taught me a lot about being a better person which is the highest compliment I could give. I'll miss you Tommy.

My deepest condolences to Dr. Williams' family and friends. I am so truly sorry for your lossðŸ’• My name is Vicky and I had the pleasure of working with Dr. W as a social worker in the ER for about 2 1/2 years. The following is something I wrote on Facebook and would like to share with you:
I'm a better person for having known you. I watched as you suffered, drug that IV pole throughout the crazy ER to get your antibiotics while treating each and every one of your patients with kindness and respect, and giving the highest quality care. I heard you talk to your patients...and really listen and take a true interest in their lives. I heard you introduce yourself to your patients "Hi, Tom Williams. What seems to be the problem?" I heard you coughing and then say you were fine. I heard you speak many of your several languages to help translate for those who didn't speak English very well. I witnessed the friendships you made with the ER family, despite rank or position. At my first HF ER Christmas party I had the opportunity to see you outside of work and experience even more of your sense of humor and quick wit! You were so extremely intelligent and yet so humble. Your shoes will never be filled.
This illness did not win., you actually kicked its ass. You fit a lifetime into your too few years. You never gave up, in fact, you pushed harder. You never used your illness as an excuse--and you rightfully could have. You accomplished more and made a larger impact in your 30+ years than most will in 80. I do look up to you with great respect and admiration. Thank you for never giving up--your actions and impact will be felt for years to come. You touched so many lives and made them better because of it. I'm thankful you are no longer suffering and are free from that frail body. Soar highðŸ’žðŸ’•ðŸ’—

So sorry to hear about Tom, he will be missed.

My wife and I are so sorry to hear about Tom. He was a year behind us in residency and he was so well liked by everyone he came into contact with. He was given the nickname "The Governor" as a term of endearment, since he was always so polished and polite to interact with. From the moment we met I knew I would like him, and enjoyed talking with him both at work and outside the hospital. He will be missed dearly.

I had the honor of being able to work with Dr. Williams for the last 4 years at Henry Ford. He was special in every context of the word. He was attentive to patients and really cared for them, he was always polite and friendly with staff and he was great at his job. Even though he was fighting his own illness he still made time to help others that were fighting their own illness. That speaks volumes about his wonderful character. He will be missed and never forgotten.

It is rare to find an individual bestowed with such a passion for knowledge along with an innate desire to help his fellow man NOT pursue a career in a major innovative field such as oncology or cardiovascular medicine where much of the greatest good can be accomplished. All of us who knew Tommy know he easily could have been an innovator if choosing such a career path. Instead, he chose a mostly thankless career in emergency medicine. It takes a special person to work as an emergency physician and Tom definitely was special.
Part of his passion was working one-on-one with resident physicians, passing on a wealth of knowledge to the these future doctors on the front lines of medicine, doing what he could to care for people at their worst moments. He did so with a smile and a joke and a degree of levity for all involved to help take away from the sting of what are often terrible situations in life. His care was exemplary even when at times when he was feeling unwell but never compromised his care of patients due to his own health issues. When he couldn't work as much as he wanted he spent time preparing lectures for his residents, always the committed teacher.
He showed by example how cheerfully helping people at their worst made all the difference. Dr. Thomas Williams will be greatly missed. Tommy was and will remain one of the most unforgettable people I have even known and had the privilege and honor to call my friend and college.
May he finally rest in peace and may his parents who have undergone the greatest tragedy in life find comfort in knowing that Tom touched countless lives and will continue to do so through the innumerable lives that will be helped by those he taught and inspired.

Dan and I are so sorry to hear of this. Tommy was a wonderful guy and a brilliant young man. Tom and Shirley, please let us know if there is anything we can do to help. Rest in peace, friend.
