Born in Newark, Ohio, he was the son of Warren and Ellen (Merchant) Swain. Jerry graduated from Newark High School in 1970 before proudly serving in the United States Navy and later in the Naval Reserves. Following his service, he continued his education at The Ohio State University, where he earned his bachelor’s degree in Science and began a lifelong career in geology.
In 1997, Jerry met the love of his life, Patty Gow. The two were married on July 23, 2005.
Jerry approached life with deep curiosity and a gentle spirit. He loved fly fishing, tending his vegetable garden, and watching birds. His sense of adventure took him across the world to places like England and Morocco, and throughout the United States, from the coast of Maine to the western states and everywhere in between. During his service in the Navy, he also visited many destinations abroad, including Spain and Iceland. His appreciation for nature was matched by his enthusiasm for collecting rocks and fossils. He enjoyed reading, cooking, playing guitar, and sharing laughs, especially when a good pun or dad joke was involved. More than anything, he treasured the time he spent with his grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Warren and Ellen Swain. He is survived by his loving wife, Patty Gow; stepson Kyle (Sarah) Himelstein and their children, Skylar (Jimmy) DeRosa and Korbin Himelstein; stepdaughter Krystal Himelstein; sister Diane Swain; along with extended family and many dear friends.
Jerry will be remembered for his calm and steady presence, his quick wit, and his remarkable ability to recall facts on nearly any topic. He was the person everyone turned to when they needed an answer. Most of all, he will be remembered as a loving grandfather whose kindness touched everyone around him.
A visitation will be held on December 6, 2025, from 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM at Schoedinger Norris Grove City, 4242 Hoover Road, Grove City, OH 43123. A funeral service will follow at 10:30 AM.
Interment will take place following the services at Galloway Cemetery, 6333 Alkire Road, Galloway, OH 43119.
