

He was raised in Welsh, Louisiana and attended St. Joseph Catholic Church. He was educated at Bethune High and completed the courses at Lincoln High (Port Arthur, Tx). Gene answered the call to join the U.S. Army during World War II. After a short time of service in the Army ; he decide that it was not his forte. Therefore, he answered another call to the U.S. Airforce and became Cpl. Eugene J. Harmon. It was with great honor Gene returned to state of Louisiana and attended the Carpentry Trade School of Jennings, La.
After a romancing courtship, Gene married the love of his life, Helen Prudhomme on September 4, 1949 in Opelousas, Louisiana. It was soon after their oldest children were born; he and his bride journeyed to Port Arthur, Tx. To this union four children were born: Diana Lynn Ford, Jaqueline Thomas-Guillory, Eugene J. Harmon Jr., and Shelly Latrice Harmon.
As a General Contractor and Cement Finisher, his life-spanned many years enjoying music, rodeos, and family. “Daddee,” as he was affectionately called by his grandchildren was also named “Dude,” “Chaunchee,” and “Poo- pautay.” But, Gene the Man was a JACK OF ALL TRADES being gifted to fix or rig up anything!! To his vitae are churches, homes, parking lots and car washes built to withstand the tests of time.
Gene succumbed to his heavenly father’s call after months of basking in the presence of God and The Word of God. Departing this earthly life for his mansion in the sky at 5:15 pm on Tuesday, November 11, 2014 on Veteran’s Day; Gene saluted the King of Kings taking his rest. He transitioned peacefully surrounded by his family at Southeast Texas Medical Center Port Arthur, Texas.
Our family stood as the Word instructed be example of King David in II Samuel 12: 16-20: We prayed, fasted and we trusted God’s Will to be done, and now our lives of worship continues as we celebrate the life of Soldier who has taken his rest.
Eugene J. Harmon Sr. (memories) will always be cherished by his loving wife Helen Prudhomme Harmon of 65 years. His children Diana L. Ford (Abram); Jacqueline H. Thomas Guillory (Timothy), Eugene J. Harmon Jr. (Odessa), Shelly L. Harmon.
Gene leaves his loving brother Hodges Harmon (Daisey) of Welsh,La. and uncles: Adam Dugar (Maxie) of Iowa, La; Martin Dugar (Elvina) of Lacassine, La; Aunt Eva Brown of Lake Charles, La.; Aunt Linda Dugar of Vinton, La. and Buster Vital. Special cousins Mary Brown, Thelma Francis, Betty Coleman-Briscoe, Joyce Thomas, and Mary (Toat) Williams were all very close to his heart. Gene cherished his grandchildren: Trena Arceneaux (Eric), Kary Vincent (Angela), Aerica Blair (Samuel), Gregory Marquis Thomas, Chad Thomas, Keisha Raymond (Jimmy), VcQuetta Dill (Anthony), VcLyssia Harmon, Katelyn Harmon, Leroy White, Jr, and Kali White, and Geraldine Harris respectively with 20 great-grandchildren.
Gene was preceeded in death by his parents James (Pete) Harmon, Lovenia (Mamie) Davis, and loving Step father Griffin Davis; Mother and Father in law Ben and Cora Prudhomme of Crowley La; Devoted Son –in- law Lawrence Thomas; Grandson Abram Tremont (Pooh) Ford, granddaughter Vcshayla Lafluer Harmon, and many other aunts, uncles and cousins. He is resting with his Hill brothers Bobbie, Chester, Pat, Clarence, Cordell, Sam, Fletcher; and Raymond Williams.
Celebration is Saturday, November 22, 2014 with Viewing 11:00AM – 1:00p Mass 1:00p; St. James Catholic Church located at 3617 Gulfway Dr. Port Arthur, Tx 77640 with Father David Edwards , Officiating under the direction of Gabriel Funeral Home.
