Passed away at St Joseph's Health Centre, Guelph on January 31 2026 in her 91st year. Beloved wife of the late Bill Steel (2015). Dear mother of Doug (Chris Sprague) of Guelph. Sister-in-law of Mary McIntosh of Wingham, Lina Steel of Sudbury and Betty McDonagh of Lucknow. Also survived by many nieces and nephews. Predeceased by parents Morley and Della (Doig) McMichael, sisters Marie Davidson and Isabelle Bremner, brothers Ken McMichael and Andy McMichael.
Alma grew up on a farm near Wroxeter. She worked as a teacher in a one-room school house near Molesworth, went on to earn her teacher's certificate and continued working as a public school teacher in Belgrave and Georgetown before marrying Bill Steel and moving to Guelph in the early 1960s.
She enjoyed many years singing in the choir at Knox Presbyterian Church in Guelph as well as assisting with other functions at the church. Alma also enjoyed dancing, gardening, word puzzles, playing cards and board games. After breaking a hip in 2022 she relied on a walker to get around until late 2025 when her mobility and health declined further. She will be missed by many friends both new and old.
Many thanks to the 5th Floor West staff at Guelph General Hospital, and staff at St Josephs Health Centre. She was especially thankful for the exceptional care and compassion she received from personal support workers at Peace of Mind Care over the last few months.
Friends will be received on Monday, February 9 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, 252 Dublin St. N., Guelph. A service will take place in the chapel at 10:30 am, followed by a reception in the Fellowship Lounge.
As expressions of sympathy, donations in memory of Alma to the Guelph General Hospital Foundation, Knox Presbyterian Church, or the University of Guelph Arboretum would be appreciated by the family.
