Art was raised and educated in Toronto. He graduated from the University of Toronto with a M.A. in 1950 and a M.Div in 1953. He was awarded an honorary Doctor of Divinity from Emmanuel College at Victoria University in 1981. Art was ordained by the Toronto Conference of the United Church in 1953. In the first 18 years of ministry, he served in four pastoral charges across Canada, including Turtleford in Saskatchewan, Platsville Ontario, St Paul's in Preston, Ontario and Manor Road in Toronto. His last 18 years before retirement were spent in specialized ministries. Art was Chaplain of the Family Court and Juvenile Detention Center in Toronto. He was on staff at the Toronto Conference of the United Church as a Personnel Minister. During these appointments, Art completed training as a Pastoral Counsellor, Teaching Supervisor, and a Marriage and Family Therapist. This led in 1981 to his final appointment as Director of the Kitchener Interfaith Counselling Centre. In 1991, Art retired as Director, but continued for several years doing contract and consultant work for the Centre and several denominations. His retirement years were spent in Waterloo and Guelph Ontario. Art is remembered for his gentle kindness, generosity of spirit and service to others.
A Celebration of Art's wonderful life will be held when COVID restrictions permit. Please stand by for future details. In lieu of flowers, donations to support Hospice Wellington in Guelph would be appreciated by the family
