SORBARA, ELEANOR After 19 years without him, Eleanor Josephine Sorbara (nee Black), in her 84th year, joined her beloved husband Orlando (Lanny) in heaven on August 13, 2015. She is missed dearly by her five daughters—Victoria (Jake), Deborah (Bob), Patricia, Louise (Frank) and Bernadette (Chris); her 12 grandchildren—Matthew (Tracy), Katie (Blaine), Rebecca and Sarah Dupuis; Michael, Elizabeth and Gregory (Katie) Morrison; Nicholas (Sarah), Danielle and Christopher Leonardi; and Rachel and Adam Bloom; and her five great-grandchildren—Lucy and Eloise Dupuis, Sophie and Juliette Bouchard, and Luke Leonardi. She’s predeceased by her parents Austin and Frances Black, her brothers McCune, Russell and Murray, and her sister Irma. Born in Belwood, Ontario, on March 30, 1932, Eleanor (also known as Miss Ellie, Grandma or Gigi) was a quick-witted force to be reckoned with. From jumping into freezing Lake Belwood as a young girl, to catching the attention of the handsome Lanny Sorbara in 1950, to regularly schooling her opponents in cribbage or bridge, she had a formidable spark even through her final days. With exquisite taste in just about everything, she was a creator and collector of beautiful things: We will forever treasure her knitting, cross stitch and hand-picked keepsakes from a lifetime of travel, as well as memories of her beautiful homes, lovely gardens and her impeccable fashion sense—which she maintained even when her rheumatoid arthritis became debilitating. She leaves her legacy in spades, in something as simple as her ginger crinkle cookie recipe at Christmas to the way she adored her children and grandchildren. She is, far and away, too well-loved to ever be forgotten, and we will miss her every day. Immense gratitude is extended to Dr. Doug Choong, Dr. Rob Fewster and Dr. Will Ruddock, and the amazing nursing team – Eleanor’s “girls” – at the Elliott Community Retirement Home, who cared for our mom and grandma with dignity, humour and compassion for so many years, and especially in the palliative stages. We are so grateful for your expertise and commitment to her care, as well as for your sensitivity and kindness. Eleanor’s family will receive friends on Sunday, August 16, 2015 from 2-4 and 7-9 pm at Gilbert MacIntyre & Son Funeral Home, Dublin Chapel (252 Dublin St. N., Guelph).
