Elizabeth Betty Kirby

KIRBY, Elizabeth (Betty) - Elizabeth Kirby born April 09 1920, passed away January 18, 2015. Betty was predeceased by her brothers John and Jim and sister Sheila and her mother Katherine (née Halter) and her father Dr. Patrick J. Kirby. Betty was raised in Guelph. She graduated from the University of Toronto with a degree in Food Sciences. Betty worked for General Mills for many years and Doctor’s Hospital in Toronto as a dietician. She had a sharp mind, great memory and good sense of humour. Betty could be stubborn and argumentative and did not give up a quarrel easily. She loved to read, especially history. Her favourite author was Willa Cather. Betty collected glassware, enjoyed occasional bets on the horses and enjoyed playing the stock market. She liked to tell the story of her great-uncle, Edward, who walked from Maryhill to Berlin (now Kitchener) to visit the parish priest, and, by pure happenstance, joined him on a trip to Rome. Edward was told to wear formal attire to meet the Pope, but he refused, introducing himself as a farmer from Waterloo. Betty leaves behind nephews and nieces, Mary, Elizabeth, Pat, Jim and Dan, Peter, Michael, Thomas and Mary Jane Kirby, Paul and John Henderson, and their spouses and their families. Wendy Oskam, personal care worker, was a good friend to Betty for many years. The family thanks the caregivers at St. Joseph’s Health Care and Guelph General Hospital. Arrangements entrusted to Gilbert MacIntyre and Son Funeral Home, Dublin Chapel, 252 Dublin St. N., Guelph. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated in the chapel of St. Joseph’s Health Centre, 100 Westmount Rd., Guelph, on Saturday, January 24, 2015 at 10:00 a.m. Interment, Marymount Cemetery, Guelph.
