A life long Guelph resident and an active member of the community. Fran officially became a member of the the Catholic Women's League at St. Joseph's Church in 1960 and continued to serve until her death. Here she donated her time in numerous ways. Fran filled in as Corresponding Secretary and acted as Community Life Convener when needed. She was a volunteer for many of the CWL'S annual bazaars, soliciting & collecting donations. She was part of the decorating committee. Fran played an active role in the CWL convention, collecting fees, organizing hotel rooms, buses to & fro. Not only that, she would participate in the entertainment and come up with skits & follies. Fran was also an event driver and would encourage other's to fill all the seats in her car going to venues close to home or far away. Fran went on to head the funeral lunch group within St. Joseph's Church and continued until she was 90 years old.
Fran was honoured by her peers and was worthy of the Maple Leaf pin. She was also granted The Frances Lovering Award for Woman of the Year in 2023. Fran felt that everyone had a place to shine and she had a special ability to draw out that potential.
Outside of her Church activities Fran at 17 became the Mayor of Teen-Town through YWCA in charge of organizing sports & dances. She played basketball into her adulthood. During that time she was scouted to go on the road with the Harlem Globetrotters' opening women's team but declined the offer. Under her loose jersey Dave was on his way. Fran volunteered for many years with St. Vincent de Paul doing home visits. She spent over 20 years collecting donations for the Canadian Cancer Society and volunteered her time to The Red Cross and The March of Dimes. Her generosity knew no bounds.
In her late 60's she began her extra film career. She can be seen in Death Wish 5 with Charles Bronson and was cast in many other Toronto based films. A highlight was a famous star asking her fellow cast mate for a cigarette who then stood & chatted with her until call back. (Whoopi Goldberg)
Amongst all her modest accomplishments Fran would be proudest of keeping the Monday Tea tradition alive, after the passing of her dear friend & neighbour. She opened her home to many ladies who wanted to come for tea, desserts, conversation & company. Fran's Husband playfully referred to the sometimes 20 or more women sitting in the dining room as “The Tea Bags” The name stuck and to this day many fondly refer to themselves as such.
Our Mother's home was a welcoming place full of laughter & comfort, adding one more person at the table was never a problem, Saturday night burgers and her Sunday roast beef dinners were legendary. The door was always open... Mothers give up their dreams, so you can have one.
