

Bernice Rose Sloan passed away peacefully on the morning of May 5, 2025, at the age of 98, in her residence at Sunrise Assisted Living in Gurnee, Illinois. Born on December 15, 1926, in Pierz, Minnesota, Bernice lived a long and meaningful life marked by compassion, service, and an unwavering love for her family. She was deeply committed to her community and especially passionate about volunteering at her church’s soup kitchen, where she gave her time and heart to those in need.
Bernice is survived by her eight children: Cathie (Ed) Peklay, Peggy (Mike) Armitage, Betsy David, Nelle Sloan, Charlie (Maggie) Sloan, Paul Sloan, Mary Sloan, and Rob (Sarah) Sloan. She was a proud grandmother to Sarah (Sam) Richardson, Joe Peklay, Adam Peklay, Sean (Amelia) Armitage, Kevin (Jenny) David, Taylor Sloan, Meghann Sloan, Olivia (Ricky) Sharma, John (Courtney) Santiago, Daniel Santiago, Ben Sloan, and Brady Sloan. She was also blessed with 14 great-grandchildren, each of whom brought her immense joy.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband of 49 years, Edward C. Sloan; her beloved grandson, Ryan M. Armitage; her parents, Helen and Dominick Merkling; her sister Marie; and her brothers Gerard, Elmer, and Edwin; as well as many cherished nieces, nephews, neighbors, and friends.
Bernice will be remembered for her quiet strength, generous heart, and the deep and steady love she shared with everyone who knew her. Her legacy of kindness and service lives on through her family, friends, and all the lives she touched.
Visitation (9:00 a.m.) followed by Mass (10:00 a.m.) will be held on Friday, May 16, 2025, at St. Dismas Catholic Church (Little Flower Parish), 2600 Sunset Avenue, Waukegan, IL 60087. There will be a private interment scheduled in the future for the immediate family.
