I will always remember all the trips Catherine and I took together. She took me a couple of times to Florida for several months in the winter. All the polka dancing in Milwaukee and Kenosha. We both took cruises, also went to Hawaii.  We did many things together.  It was nice having a baby sister take me places. She will always be with me.  Your sister, Frances.

I REMEMBER ALL THE GOOD CHRISTMASES WE HAD.  THE ONE THAT  STANDS OUT THE MOST TO ME IS WHEN I GOT MY ROLLER SHATES.  EVERY TIME SHED TRYED TO BUY THEM, I,D SHOW UP.   SHE WAS A VERY GOOD STEP MOTHER TO ME.                                       BETTY JEAN TEWELL-PARR   (MOUNTAINBURG,  ARKANSAS )

I met Cathy in late 1967. I had been seeing her daughter, Jo, for a while when my family decided to move to California for my father's health. I was forced to go as well since I was under age. I let it be known that I did not want to be there so Cathy gathered up Jo, borrowed Dennis's 1967 Buick, came and got me and took me back to Illinois. In her last years, while she was living with us, Jo and I decided to let her eat pretty much as she had most of her life - she loved junk food! At her age and with the effects of her stroke and dementia, it would have been a huge battle to try and change her and it seemed that not letting her live and eat as she had over her life would be a punishment. Cathy had always loved her sweets, so we had a "sweet pile" by the toaster - pies, cakes, donuts, etc. The object of this pile was that for every healthy meal she ate she could have one desert from the sweet pile. Getting to the junk food after Jo fed her breakfast became a game for Cathy. She and Jo would usually watch some "ladies" program together. I would go downstairs to the basement and watch the old tube type TV, leaving the flat screen to Cathy and Jo. After they watched whatever it was, Jo would tell Cathy she was going upstairs to work on paper work. After Jo was gone for about 5 minutes I would hear a sneaky, barely perceptible little slide on the floor upstairs. So I'd go upstairs and, sure enough, Cathy was trying to sneak to the baked goods. Once caught, she would always try to throw me off by going into the bathroom or some other ploy. If I went downstairs, in a matter of minutes Cathy would quietly emerge and continue her sneaky trip to the sweets. And I would catch her again! Now she would open drawers like she was looking for something. After a minute or two she would go back to the TV and sit down. We never got angry over this. We just assumed it gave her a game to play. And to be honest, there was more than one example of her being so sneaky and quiet that she would win! I'd come upstairs to find her eating a captured donut or piece of cake - and smiling at her win!

Yes, she was my big sister, she pulled me home by sleigh in the winter - about 2 miles. My ma had me take toe-dancing, my shoes were pink. When I worked in North Chicago she took me square dancing, she helped me, I was lonesome to go back home. She was my mom from home. We both will not forget her.

Ohhh Aunt Catherine! What a cool lady. I am one of the strays that she was so fond of letting in. About 10ish years ago my mom, Tina Smith, convinced me that is was no big deal for a man in his late 20's, early 30's to take a room in the home of a 70year old woman (while finishing a project I was working on in the area). Best unorthodox living situation I have ever had the privilege of experiencing. All of the characteristics attributed to her here are true. She had a great sense of humor, and she would often make me laugh with stories, both old and new. One of the things I will always remember is her love for her cats and the monstrous mural she had made in tribute to them. Makes me giggle just thinking about it. I loved how excited she would get when getting all dressed up to go line dancing. I remember sitting with her and making jokes about those "damn computers". Catherine, I still want to drop it out the window most days. 
But, I think what I will remember clearest, and hold closest, was her seemingly unwavering dedication to finding the "bright side" of things. She was a positive person, I rarely saw her angry or frustrated. She just seemed to exude this sort of good energy that everyone here was a beneficiary of. 
Bottom line, I might not be in this world if it weren't for Catherine's willingness to give the little girl that was my mother shelter from the storm so long ago. 
When I think of her, I smile. I can only hope to leave such a mark on this world

My mom meant the world to me. We had a very close relationship and enjoyed doing things together, especially shopping and dancing. There was a time, after she retired, when she danced 6 nights a week. She'd call me at work and ask if I'd meet her at the Sundance in Mundelein or the Moose Club in Kenosha when I got off from work. Many times I wouldn't even have time to go home to change clothes - I'd go straight there. She saw to it that I had a very active childhood. At one point in my life she had me enrolled in tap, ballet, toe, jazz, acrobatics, guitar and swimming lessons. Added to that I roller skated every Sunday night and ice skated almost every winter night. Not sure now how I did all that while going to school but I did. She just seemed to find every opportunity to enjoy life. She never lost her sense of humor - whether it was bantering with Rick, Chris or Jeff (they loved to tease her about food) or putting a wicker basket on her head because she wanted to wear a hat outside by the pool because Tina had one. It saddeded me so to see her confined to that walker and wheelchair the past 5 1/2 years unable to do the things she so enjoyed. I loved my mom dearly and will always miss her.

Aunt Catherine was my favorite aunt. Growing up we spent many Sundays at her house.  My dad, brother, and I worked on the addition on her house pounding nails and eating pasta. Good times. She made all her neices and nephews feel very special. She had a unique voice and I could pick it out in a crowd. She kept a cheerful disposition through some rough times. Rose and I enjoyed visiting her in Florida and Winthrop Harbor and always had a good time with her. She will be missed, but what wonderful memories she left us!

I was very fond of my Aunt Catherine.  I remember the Christmas parties at the little house in Zion with the entire family.  Does anybody remember the snails that we used to eat at the parties?  When I got back from being in the Army, she was my last 'date' before I got married.  We went to Oliver's on Route 41.  She was always a lot of fun, a good listener and a very special lady.  She will be missed.

My grandma was one of a kind. She had such a kind heart and although I liked to think I was special, I know I'm not the only one she took in when they needed help. She's done it so many times before for other family members. She even took in her new neighbor and his family in Florida when they were building a house and it wasn't ready when they arrived to move in.  They were complete strangers to her and she took them in anyway. That's just the type of person she was. I love my grandma and will miss her.

Cathy adopted her last cat, Fancy, from me in the late 1990's.  She was so happy to finally have a silver Persian.  Cathy and I kept in touch through the years. She sent pictures of herself and her cats and told stories of her family. Although we didn't have the chance to meet in person, Cathy became very dear to me. She loved her home in FL and enjoyed her many visitors.  I know she loved her family and friends dearly as I can see all of you loved her. Carol Feazell

Tina's Aunt Catherine was amazing. I know she was a great influence on her as she grew up - I heard many stories of her kindness and her organizing skills! Glad Tina and her cousin were able to spend time with Catherine before she passed. Please accept my sympathy on your loss.

I remember all the family get togethers at Auntie Catherine's . She'd be beautifully dressed ---cooking and entertaining for the family . She understood children and I wished that my Mom could be more like her .  
   When she was so sick herself, she would listen to my father--  who would  talk with her on the phone ---in the last months of his life and gave him encouragement . 
     I will miss my Auntie Catherine .

When my girls were younger and we would visit her she would always let them take home a stuffed animal and they loved it!

what a truly kind and caring gentle lady. cathy was so helpful,next time we go to florida and look next door there will be a part missing. she was so welcoming and the best thing was the pool was always over 90 degrees and lovely!

I remember the good times when we when shopping together

cathy was  a treasure when we found ourselves stranded in florida waiting for our house to be finished she put complete strangers up in her home for a few days, helping us in any way she could. this kind gesture will be remembered by myself my husband and son forever she was a wonderfull lady. we will miss our times with cathy in florida. we will keep her close in our hearts. Catherine took me into her home and heart when I was very young and felt very alone.  I learnedwhat it was to be part of a family.  She taught me how to sew my own clothes, cook, and clean. She even taught me how to drive.

Through her I learned to dance.  I have many great memories of going to Slavonic Hall polkadancing with her
and my cousin Jo.  Bless her heart, she even tried to teach me country swing and line dancing.  She was
kind to everyone, generous, fun and funny, had an open heart for everyone including the stray animal who needed care.  

I am so grateful that I got to spend time with her last winter in Florida.  Her and I were the early birds and were able to spend time talking about the past and laughing (or giggling) about silly things.  

I hope I thanked her enough for all she did for me.

I will miss her deeply.  I don't know who I'd be if it wasn't for her presence in my life.

I remember Catherine would come over and help me with Joe and visit with him.  She was like my older sister.  She used to make me laugh telling stories.  We did a lot of things together when she moved down here to Florida.  I miss her alot.  I remember when I came from Italy in 1956 and she lived in the little house in Illinois.  She was always cooking and having dinners for all of us.  I didn't undertand English and she could understand but not speak Italian but somehow we understood each other.  Catherine's house was alway open to welcome everyone.  I love her and will miss her alot.

Grandma Cathy was very special to me.  She's one of the only people who could drag me out onto a dance floor even though I'm terrified of dancing. I'll actually miss her trying to set me up with someone she'd met that she thought was ideal for me. Grandma was excited about "chocolate". Her favorite was a Kit Kat bar and I enjoyed teasing her by trying to steal them from her. She always caught me because she always had her eye on that Kit Kat bar. She'll always be in my heart and little things like that will remind me of her excitement over some simple thing that brought joy to her. I will miss her but never forget her.

During some of my most difficult times Catherine was there to cheer me up.  I was very young, but she would call me and say "we're going dancing" get ready.  I would and she would pick me up and take me to dance the polka (I really didn't know how to do the polka).  But I had great fun! The family parties will always be remembered with all the food she would make and her cabinet of glasses. I loved her and will miss her, but will remember her smiling face and her love of cookies.

Catherine was a kind and generous person.   She was always willing to lend a helping hand and was much loved by Nathan Luppino and his family.  We enjoyed our visits to her and she was such a gracious hostess.  Our sincere sympathy goes to her surviving family members. Catherine was well cared for in the last few years of her life by her daughter, JoAnn.  We will miss her friendly smile and contagious laugh.

My best friend, Tina, lived with her Aunt Catherine growing up in Winthrop Harbor, and she always had a smile and a joke for us. Some good stories of the 'old days' too. We took her out country dancing later in life and she out-danced us younger women! I would run into her often around town (sometimes with my mom, who also retired from Abbott) and always enjoyed chatting with her. Her kindness and gentle spirit showed through, and her sense of humor stayed with her, too, as I learned visiting her in the hospital and having her crack jokes!  Her niece spent many hours over the years taking care of her with love and gratitude, and I know she will be missed and remembered fondly by everyone who knew her. Adios, Catherine!
