"Mack" Donald Ray as we use to call him in the Army was a friend of mine as we were stationed in Frankfurt Germany. We spent a lot of time together learning Tae Kwon Do and socializing with friend like Lloyd and Nan Schmidt, Lary and Nan Butler, Mr and Mrs. Hong and others. He is truly missed. 

Ray and I were buds in the Army when stationed in Frankfurt, Germany,. We both learned Tae Kwon Do together under Master Hong Sung-In and eventually made it to 2nd Dan together.  We had a good time together despite being in the Army and I have a lot of pictures of us doing a lot of thinks together. 
Boy could he hit a softball. He formed a softball league while at the 97th General hospital and I just loved it when he'd come up to bat, because I new he'd clobber that ball, and he always did.

I'm so sorry he passed at such a young age and I offer my condolences to his family 

Ray was not just a good prosthetist...  he was a good man and friend.  He will be truly missed.  He not only was talented to make my legs,  he gave me the will to want to walk again.  I know its not goodbye, just until later, so save a seat for me buddy.  Always such a shame to see such a good man die so young  God bless Ray, his family and friends.

Dr. McKinney was truly an angel in every essence of the word.  My mother Dorothy Yellen was one of his oldest patients-30 plus years. She began seeing him at his office on Grand Avenue and followed him to the Gurnee office.  She would call him at any hour of the day and he always made time to see her and "tweak" her prosthesis so she could walk comfortably.  He would  come in on a Saturday just to see her, and even drove an hour to Downers Grove where she lived to see her when she couldn't make it to Gurnee.  He and his whole office were like family to my mom.
His incredible legacy will trickle down through his wonderful son Mike and daughter Melissa. He helped so many people and will not be forgotten. A true angel and missed greatly.

We are sorry for your loss.He was an exceptional doctor.He went to my husband doctor appointment recently to help him get new prosthesis.We were so grateful that he took his valuable time to oversee this process.We will miss him.

Ray was an amazing man who worked tirelessly for the good of his patients.His skills were second to none. He gave new life to so many of us and will be dearly missed.I pray his staff will be able to carry on his legacy.

My Army buddy Ray,
We shared a time in the army only we can relate to. In Basic we were trained by an elite Air Born Ranger. He threw out the book! and turned us into the best unit on the Base. I believe Sgt Oliver set Ray on the path to his success! Ray and I also went to medical combat school, we grew up in the same neighborhood! Oh the story's we could tell. Ray you're a big part of me and always in my thoughts.

Our thoughts and prayers to the McKinney family.  Four yrs. ago I lost both legs.  For 2 yrs. I was in a wheelchair and constant pain with the pin method.  One day a miracle happened.  We went to our first support meeting where Ray was the speaker and Mark demonstrated the elevated vacuum socket system.  I was very impressed and met Ray again on l0/16/14.  My life changed!  I found the most caring man who helped me walk without pain.  I still have obstacles to meet and hope and pray Ray's legacy continues.  God bless you Ray for all you've done for me. How ironic to be at UIC hospital today for an evaluation regarding a new prosthetic limb, to discover from the doctors doing my intake that my very first practitioner, Ray McKinney, passed away just few days ago. Ray's original practice where I used to see him was in Waukegan, and his son now runs the shop up in Gurnee. Ray was very well respected within the prosthetic and rehabilitation community, and made a difference in so many amputees lives which is why doctors as far down as UIC in Chicago had heard of his passing. I remember him telling me he got into working as a prosthetist when his mother needed care regarding limb loss, and he fitted me with my first practical and comfortable prosthetic limb in 1997. I was shocked and stunned to be sitting in the doctor's office to hear he died, I had last spoken with him in 2012 when I was researching new practitioners in Chicago to discover he was semi-retired but willing to give me good advice and direction as I was getting work done with my limb at that time ( I STILL have his message calling me back when I reached out to him in my voicemail box, with the intention of visiting him again at some time up in Gurnee). Ray was so instrumental helping me in my transition from hobbling around on one leg and crutches to walking again on two legs thanks to his skills and I am eternally grateful that with his help I could feel "normal" again. He was more than a practitioner to his patients, he was their friend. I am lucky I had the chance to reconnect with him albeit briefly in 2012 but so very sad to hear this news and wanted to post his obituary here in tribute him in thanks for helping restore broken people's lives in the most monumental of ways thanks to his dedication and kindness.

R.I.P. Ray you will be missed by so many whose lives you helped restore and my sincere condolences to the McKinney family, I am so sorry for your loss.

I was not only a patient but also a friend. Ray was a wonderful and great man.  My wife Marianne and I will miss him very much.  Our sympathy to Ray" family.

Like losing the brother that you never see or talk to often enough. We always had a lot in common and believe that is why we got along so well together; your initials DR and my nickname DOC; both from the upper Midwest with the values that were instilled in us; both served with the US Army; both loved our sports and knew how to celebrate a victory and console in defeat. Maybe that is why we both took up golf with a passion, because we always competed against the best opponent-ourselves! Hole in one on cloud #9 dear friend. You leave behind a family that has learned all the life lessons you have instilled in them and will proudly carry on the Mc Kinney legacy.

Ray was a friend and golf buddy of my dad's, so he became a friend and golf buddy of mine. I enjoyed playing many rounds with him out at the now-closed Orchard Hills in Waukegan, IL.  He was a very nice and generous man and he will be missed.  My condolences to his family.

I am so sad to lose such a wonderful friend. I have many great memories of him through the years. He always had a smile on his face and ready to help anyone he could. I am thankful to have been a part of his life. When the wind blows I'll know you're swinging your club, when lightning strikes, I'll know you had a hole in one, when the thunder cracks,  I'll know you hit in the woods, when it starts to rain it's time to head for the clubhouse. Till we see each other again...

Ray and I went to Jr. High and High School together, later on I became a client. He was the best I have dealt with. I wish we could play golf together one more time. My condolences to the family, may he rest in peace.

Ray was not only my Leg doc, he was a friend too. I learned quite a bit from Ray and about many things unrelated to his business and the industry. Ray always greeted you with a smile and a handshake without fail. 

May you golf The Masters in Heaven with bagpipes playin and never have to wait for a tee time Ray. God bless you and your loved ones, there will never be another like you sir!

You made the world a better place for so many people.   I will miss you.

You came into my life as I was discovering how to live within my changing world. You became a trusted friend and at times the voice of reason. You were with my when I took my first steps. As you promised I walk out into the real world that same day one step at a time. When complications recently set in you check in with me if I forgot to text you an update. You have always been there for you us amputees 24/7 and loved doing it.

I guess I have graduated now and will apply the skills you gave me. I have a much bigger world to explore and experience. You have helped reinforce my no limits view of my world.

During our visits our conversations were so broad and interesting we shared a lot with each other. You gave me the tools to return fully to my world. For that I am forever grateful. God must have a need for a great Prosthetist as he has called the best one home.

God bless you my friend, I have been Blessed to know you. You have made a difference in my life;
